Daniel Valverde: "Mir will find out how good Nogueira's Jiu Jitsu is"

New Daniel Valverde interview.

On Mir, Nogueira and Magalhaese...

"Frank Mir will find out how good Nogueira's Jiu Jitsu is on December 27th if the fight goes to the floor. I’ve been training with a lot of great Jiu Jitsu guys and Nogueira is the best I have ever trained with. I had the chance to roll with Vinny while at the show and he did not tap me out. If it was to be a Jiu Jitsu competition, I would win by points and he is 30 pounds heavier than me. I think he is a good Black Belt, but nothing extraordinary. I would like to face him in a Jiu Jitsu competition."

"Vinny called me and Nogueira to apologize and he said that he didn’t mean to disrespect us, but everything that he said on the show is taped. He is not a bad guy; he just thinks that he is better than he really is."

"I think Frank Mir has good Jiu Jitsu. He’s dangerous, but Nogueira’s Jiu Jitsu is much better. In addition, Nog has better hands and cardio than Mir. He didn’t change his training for this fight."

"Definitely Nogueira will try knocking him out and finish the fight standing up."

Interesting... I've always secretly been afraid that Nogs BJJ is not that good compared to a lot of new black belts. This is really a relief, hearing something like this from someone like Valverde.

Its like Bravo or Drysdale talking about Mir's bjj`, doubt either has much if any personal experience at all about Nog's bjj either. I would be shocked if Valverde would have said that either Mir or Vinny has better bjj than Nog does, bit too biased opinion to take seriously.

Haha. Yeah I thought that he sounded a bit defensive in that interview. Really, who cares if some young guy is running his mouth a bit? If he was really that good, then he wouldn't feel so threatened by vinny talking trash.
Ya Exactly. Ok Vinny talked some trash too, but as we have no actual video data of Valverde vs. Vinny or Nog vs. Vinny rolling against each other all we have is 2 young cocky'ish guys smacktalking.
I believe Nog's bjj and cardio are better than Mir's if that is actually shown in their fight. I couldn't really care less how high their friends rate their skills, because those are way too biased opinions and they got quite different styles on mma bjj anyway. Neither have any huge success on pure (gi or no-gi) bjj competions either, and both have alot of impressive submission wins. ^^

I think Mir has great jits off his back and that is his real strength, but that won't be effective when a guy like Nog is on top of you.

I don't think we can really say whose jits is better because they are so different in how they use it.

I just hope it hits the mat. I know Mir has little to no chance if it doesn't

bbjd where are you?

nog is a really good black belt in jiu jitsu but in grappling competitions he would not be a top guy. I mean he would not beat guys like xande and roger but it is understandable as Nog is an mma fighter not a jiu jitsu competitor.

Be that as it may, but from what Valverde said I gather Noguaira at least manages to submit him in practice, which at least tells me his jitz is still in some sort of shape.

From what I've seen in videos Nog never uses a lot of his strength when rolling with people, he seems very laid back and relaxed when doing it, not at all insisting on submissions or positions. That may be a cause for people at TUF saying his jiu jutsu is not that good.

Plus, Mir has said that Nog has probably got better jitz than him. And I'll have to agree: Mir's guard against Lesnar (exept the exellent kneebar) was terrible!

Not really. If Vinny is 30 pounds heavier than Valv, it means Nog is like 60-70 pounds heavier than Valv. All it says is that Valv can't outroll a black belt that is 30 pounds (Vinny) or 60-70 pounds (Nog) heavier than him, not really shocking news to me atleast.

I don't think Nog's pure no-gi bjj is better than Vinny's (Vinny has beaten both Drysdale and Ribeiro on no-gi tournaments), but he has arguably the best mma bjj of any division (Maia is pretty close I would say). Its not flashy or fancy at all like Vinny's or Maia's, or explosive like Mir's, but it gets things done just as well if not even better.
Also defensively its extremely impressive like Serra's, but Nog has bigger size (compared to rest of the guys in his division, Serra is kinda short) and his sweeps are so damn effective.

Even though Nog has better stand up (technically) he isn't exactly known for his KO/TKO wins. I think he has maybe 4-5 or so of those total and 20~ submission wins. He'll control the stand up and will win by decision eventually if it goes that far, but the fight will go to ground at some point and we will see some badass bjj then. Because of awesome odds and the fact that Mir has been working on his weaknesses (stand up and cardio)Im betting on Mir to sub Nog, but yeah Nog is the clear favourite on this. :)

I really dont think that Mir is going to find out how good Nogs JJ is. I think the only thing he is going to find out is how hard he punches and then wonder why the f-ck he is in this fight anyway.

He should just get Fedor to jump in when it starts to get ugly haha

Hypothetical -

IF Mir subs Nog, what will people on this board say? Will those that have been adament it wont happen admit they were wrong, or just pretend they didnt say it?

I love Nog, but i think the amount of disrespect Mir gets shown around here is too much.
