American Top Team coach Ricardo Liborio tells GracieMag.com:

“There’s a good chance. Nothing’s in ink yet, but there really is a good chance Marcelo will be in the GP,”

It seems like Garcia will have a busy 2009, Liborio elaborates:

“There’s a chance he’ll be in everything out there this year. Marcelo is hard focused on MMA, but if it happens to come at a time when he has nothing lined up, there’s a good chance he’ll be in the ADCC too. He’s been training a lot of muay thai and wrestling and is good all around,” the ATT coach said.

The DREAM Welterweight GP could be a GP of expert grapplers as Shinya Aoki is already confirmed, and Andre Galvao and Marcello Garcia are close to participation.

Marcello Garcia defeated Shinya Aoki at ADCC 2005.

Wow, this is going to be the coolest GP ever. Some of the top BJJ practitioners in the world. I still am picking Aoki to win. While Galvao and Marcelo are by far the better BJJ practitioners, Aoki has a lot of experience and will probably win a grappling match with either of them because of the ability to strike. (even though aoki's strikes arent the best, against two people who are fairly green to mma, its his key to victory)

Wow, this is interesting. Marcelo has been training at ATT for a while now, so I wonder how well his game has adapted to MMA. If Marcelo, Galvao, and Aoki all fight in the GP, I'll probably cream my pants. You're guaranteed some BJJ awesomeness between the three of them.

They are really getting talent out of nowhere for this GP.

Seriously, there were hardly any WW's in Japan that could compete with Sakurai, he would of been a huge favourite. Now they've managed to get Aoki up from Lightweight, Andre Galvao and Marcelo Garcia! EDIT: Alessio and K-Taro also rumoured I see.

I really hope everything rumoured, happens. This GP is going to be so much better than I originally anticipated.

It's a shame that Nick Diaz won't be in it. I'll live with a fun match-up with Frank though.

Seriously Marcelo might win this. He is supposedly amazing on the ground with gloves on he chokes out everyone at ATT with his guillotine.

Marcelo IMO would be possibly the hardest fight possible for Aoki because Aoki would have to outstrike him.

Marcelo is just at a different level on the ground then anyone else.

I thought Elite and Dream had a working relationship? If Strikeforce carried that relationship over then there could be some amazing matchups. With such fantastic grapplers in this GP they should get some of the Strikeforce WW's.

My prediction: Marcelo Garcia vs Sakurai in the final.
Unless some new talent gets announced.

I would get a boner if Aoki subbed Galvao or Garcia.

Aoki vs. Garcia, who gets the KO?

Your right he probably does it quicker now.

Marcelo is supposedly unstoppable at this point because he has added the guillotine to his submission game.

Marcelo has improved just like Aoki has and Marcelo is just on a different level then Aoki on the ground.

Anyone who doesn't think so is blinded.

d.
Lol what? Garcia has always used the guillotine... he likes to set it up from his butterfly guard. He explains it really well in his X-Guard book.

I'm a Marcelinho nuthugger. At least, if I hug any nuts, they're his. But that's just because I think he's the best pound-for-pound grappler of all time.

If he steps in the GP, Aoki better pray that he does draw Marcelo early. I have a feeling they'll put them at opposite ends, but if they do end up fighting early, that'd suck for Shinya.

Shinkya wins because no body can grapple like him. Unfortunately, Marcelo's way, way better on the mat. Turning a fight into a pure grappling match works great when Shinya is fighting MMA fighters, but against the greatest pure grappler in the lightweight division, it's not going to be a good idea.

The only way Marcelo will lose is if he struggles with the striking or with the gloves (like he did in his K-1 fight). If everything we're hearing is true, and Marcelinho has figured out how to choke with the gloves on, then the world should be very, very afraid.

If it becomes a grappling match Aoki will lose. However, it will be very hard for Marcelo to do a lot of things that allow him to win in grappling matches.
Marcelo won't be able to use X-guard or he will get kicked in the head.
At this moment I give the fight to Aoki, but that is also depending on how far along Marcelo's striking is.

At this point, no one short of Xande, Drysdale and Roger (who are all around 230 or up) can beat Marcelo. I know Jacare did a while back, but if they rolled at ADCC in 2009, I think Marcelo would take it.

Still, it's a great point.

Not only is Marcelo the best lightweight in the world. He's one of the best grappers in the world at any weight class. He's top four or five on any list (top three on mine), regardless of weight. It's pretty scary.

Nah Terere can beat him, in fact he did it twice.
Well Terere kinda dissapeared from the jits scene... he was supposedly getting into lots of trouble, and had some sort of mental illness or something. He was reported as making a comeback though, here's the article: Click

Here's a good thread about him on Sherdog also: Click

Yeah but there was recently an article on tatame, that I can't find, that talked about Terere and pretty much they said he wasn't coming back to BJJ.
