Everyone will try to push the Muai Thai, and its not that i dont think its good but EVERYONE and their mom is doing that. So lately ive been a fan of Savate, look into the classics like karate (its a viable use of standup skills, take Machida as an example)

But im sure you`ll get the thai boxing comments, it is the most popular right now.

again look no further then Lyoto Machida, i think he trains shotokan karate one of the more agressive forms.

Ya you`d have to go to a local place and find out. I think its worth learning something a bit different, and im not saying focus on that forever, only that you could start there and then move on.

Another option is to just take general kickboxing those are pretty fun you can just drop into it and leave whenever as well.

Machida may have started traditionla, but has been MMA training for a while.

The traditional striking sports are outdated. Muay Thai is good- just make sure it's the dutch variant. Some branches of American Kickboxing use shin kicks-they are very good as well. You wnat to combine western boxing with Thai kicks as that is the most effective mix- that is how the 'dutch' schools have updated it and american kickboxing has incorporated the Thai kicks into what already was western hands.

There are a lot of great stand up styles. Boxing, Muay Tai, Karate,TKD the list goes on. The bottom line is train. Too many Martial artists belive their style is superior to others. No matter what disipline you do it will make you a better fighter period. Every style has its strenghts and weaknesses.

my favorite thing about the thai boxing is that it includes knees and elbows, which will be handy in MMA.

But, I personally favor boxing. In MMA, it's easier to survive with no kicks than with no hands.

Of course, having both are best.

But since you said that you're in it for the recreation, I'd say that it will depend on your personal preferences more than anything else.

Some people find full contact (boxing, kickboxing, MT, Sanda, etc) fun. Others hate getting rattled by hard shots on a regular basis. Some people find point fighting (karate, TKD) to be awesome. Some other people like to give and recieve more brain damage, so point fighting isn't really for them. In the end, you should study up on what each style (thats available in your area) will give you, and try out as much as you can. Then stick with what you liked best.
