AX Fighting March Madness. Lynnwood WA
Randy Couture's and Chris Leben's hometown is Lynnwood and all the Lynnwood fighters won their respective macthes in the neighboring city of Edmonds. 14 fights, 3.5 hours. 3 minute rounds, one minute breaks. All fights 3 rounds, the last 2 championship bouts were 5 rounds.
He was hiding but the organizers put Rich Franklin on the spot an called him up. He didn't do anything to promote the organization (probably in accordance with his contract). He only talked about his upcoming fight with Lutter.
Matt Hume was there as well- he is now training Rich for his upcoming fight..
The place was oversold, and many only had standing room.
The ring girls were massively hot, and they are the one thing I will remember most form tonight.
Very few people got booed, which was nice.
The early bouts were all entertaining as heck. Strikes, Armbars, slams. The heavyweights amde Tim Sylvia look ripped, but they put on one hell of a fight as well.
One fight contrasted good striking against good BJJ. The BJJ guy slapped on 3 armbars, but each time the striker got away and repeatedly slammed the BJJ guy onto his head.
One fight a guy was walked into a punch by a TaeKwondo guy of all things, got mounted and he escaped the mount by climbing feet first up the other guy's back, recovered form the near knock out and got the win by mount and G-n-P., The blows were a little weak, and he got booed, but I thought he did great. Of all things the TKD guy's nickname was Ninja. I mena a traditional art in MMA got him what he deserved- a beating. But to put Japanese nicknames on a Korean Sport is retarded.
The 2 main events were title bouts in 135 and 155 weight classes. The 135 fight was pretty one sided for "Mighty Mouse" out of Matt Humes' Gym and the fight was technically brilliant. Great wrestling, reversals, escapes from the mount- and people found that boring.
The main event showed Ben fOdor winning a narrow 48-47 in 5 rounds. Yes, Fodor, not Fedor. I had Ben losing the first 2 rounds and he just held on longer than the other guy.
All the more technical fights seemed boring to some casual fans and the few fights where there was a skill discrepancy just looked better. No wonder Kimbo is popular with the less expereicned MMA fan. The casual fans I talked too didn't know what a triangle choke was.
All in all great times and I'd rather watch this than the UFC. 27 bucks well spent.
