Tonight, heavyweight Mark “The Smashing Machine" Kerr makes his return to mixed martial arts in the IFL's Superfight against Mike Whitehead, a contestant from the second season of Spike’s Ultimate Fighter. Kerr, a D-1 NCCA wrestling champion at Syracuse University, brought mayhem and brute force to MMA in the late 1990's and briefly after Y2K. His success came during one of the most violent periods in MMA when there were few rules and regulations. But Kerr is best known as the main subject of an excellent HBO documentary that came out in 2002, appropriately called “The Smashing Machine.” It showed him during a time when his life was as reckless, tortuous and forbidding outside the ring as it was inside it. While Kerr came across as a young man/gladiator with a load of problems, he was eminently likable—and you were pulling for him from the get-go. Not just fans of MMA but anyone who saw the film was left wondering, What ever happened to that guy? Is he alive? Not only is he still with us, he’s doing very well--mentally, emotionally, and physically. And the articulate, personable behemoth says he’s still got some fight left in him, too.

We're all pulling for Mark. I saw the original documentary when it was airing on HBO a few times and was blown away by his honesty & geniunely kind personality. Whatever he does I can only wish him success in his personal relationships & physical health. Mark really is a good guy.

I was hoping Mark Kerr would win last night. But, unfortunately he lost to Mike Whitehead at 2:40 of the 1st round by TKO (Strikes) :(. Makes me sad, Kerr is a great guy and an amazing fighter. Hope he can come back and get a win.

i agree with everyone else on this thread. kerr is one of the nicest guys out there. just seems to have a bumpy road sometimes.

at one point i think the ifl talked about offering him a coaching deal. i wonder if that's still on the table. on that note, i wonder how good of a coach he'd make? experience in the ring alone doesn't make one a good coach. what do u guys think?

I think Mark Kerr would be a great coach. I have his takedown instructional and he's a very nice guy, will take his time to go through everything, step by step. I thought if he beat Whitehead he got the coaching job? If that's the case looks like he's not going to be a coach.

He is a great coach, thats already known. If they dont wanna use him coz of the Whitehead fight its their loss. Ricco Rodriguez and Tito Ortiz used to bring in Kerr as a coach whenever they were to fight wrestlers, that should speak abit of his coaching skills

Yeah, I've actually heard rumors that he and Dean Lister have been working with Tito for the Chuck fight. I don't know if it's true, but Kerr is definitely one of the best men for the job.

I would love for the IFL to give him a coaching job. All of the coaches in that organization are good fighters and Kerr would be a great addition to that list.

The IFL Coaches List, as I have been informed, for the 2007 season is:

Bas Rutten (Anacondas, Los Angeles)
Carlos Newton (Dragons, Ontario)
Ken Shamrock (Lions, Susanville, CA)
Renzo Gracie (Pitbulls, New York)
Frank Shamrock (Razorclaws, San Jose)
Ken Yasuda (Sabres, Tokyo)
Pat Miletich (Silverbacks, Quad City)
Maurice Smith (Tiger Sharks, Seattle)
Matt Lindland (Wolfpack, Oregon)
Ian Freeman (TBD?, London)

As you may have noticed, there are only 10 names here, I have been told there will be 12 for the 2007 season.
