Where to start?

I've been working out, weight-training and endurance for the last 2 years. Brought myself up to 185lbs, at 18 standing at 5f11. I'm off to College in a month in Ontario, and I'm really eager to find some sort of a MA club so I can get into MA as kind of a sport. Other than actual fighting, i'm new to MA completely.

I did some research and found some clubs/schools that I could possibly start myself at, but not really sure which of them I should take up.

One is called Ronin Martial Arts Academy. I'm not really sure the fundamentals in this, and if it's something similiar to MMA or if it's simply based on one art. I want a mix. Is this good for me?

Another is Ares Kickboxing School, and I guess the name says it. There is also a Judo club, but I'm not too hyped on just Judo set-alone.

I think I'm going to make some calls out tomorrow and ask some questions... What sort of questions should I be asking? And is it too late for me to start at a club?

I was in somewhat the same boat you're in a little over a year ago with pretty much the same goals. As stupid as this sounds, find out what the gym specifically trains. Just because their name says "kickboxing" doesn't mean thats all they train. Similarly, if a gym trains MMA fighters to compete, chances are they also allow "hobbyists" to train there also. Fighters have to start somewhere.

Check out their schedule and class times, do they offer private lessons (these can be invaluable). What is their mix on cardio/calisthenics vs. technique, and what do YOU want? What is their pricing like?

Ask to attend a few days worth of classes and see if you like the regimen and the instructors. If they have a problem with this its a serious red flag.

Lastly, check out the cleanliness of the place. this can also be an immediate dealbreaker. If you join you will be in close physical contact with sweaty people rolling around on mats. Clean mats, workout areas seriously reduce the chances of ringworm, staph and other infections. These infections are really contagious and you don't want to accidently bring one home!!

My thoughts, some may agree/disagree. Feel free to PM mee if you want to continue.

yeah, that cleansiness question will definately pop up. i wouldn't mind private lessons, but yes, i'll have to check the pricing first. i'm hoping whatever they offer i won't have to do labels for too long if it all, so i guess i'll have to ask about that too lol. thanks man.
