Starting with MMA

Hey guys,

So I started getting pretty serious about working out and such. I've made some great progress with weight loss and some muscle building over the past year but still have a ways to go before I'm satisfied.

Anyway, I'd like to add some beginner MMA training into the mix as well. My plan right now is to take a few months to build some more muscle and increase my overall stamina, and then begin some beginner training.

Basically I'm not looking to go pro or anything like that, I just want to add the MMA element into my life and my only goal is to be able to defend myself on the streets with it and of course the added fitness that comes with it.

I'm 21, I have very little experience with this kinda stuff in general. I did some karate and taek-won-do when I was younger, but nothing that would help me in a street fight today or anything I really remember to be honest.

There are some MMA gyms I've looked into around my area, I was wondering if you guys had any tips as to what to look for and what I can expect when starting this out.

Thanks for any help!

Hiya mate, where is your area? I may be able to reccommend some gyms, are you looking to improve all round fighting techniques or one in particular e.g standup, or groundwork?
As a general rule, all I can suggest is that you try finding a gym with Pro fighters, as even if your not looking to fight, they'll be able to offer you techniques that are tried and tested, and the standard of students will normally be better so you'll improve quicker.
I live in the U.K, so know more about the gyms here, but know a fair few guys from mine, or associated gyms have trained in U.S, and Holland.
Reply back and i'll try and help you out mate?

Hey man, thanks for the reply.

I'm in Ottawa, Canada actually. I suppose I want to get better at stand up before groundwork, like maybe start out with striking and such? Basically if I ever get into it at a bar or something I want to be able to defend myself you know? That and just the fitness that comes with MMA training is all I'm looking for.
