What do you guys think of amateur titles?

What is your opinion on amateur titles?

I used to feel like they were kind of silly since it's just amateur after all, but since New England started doing amateur rankings, promotions began to consider having amateur champions. Just a few weeks ago, one promotion actually put this idea into motion and crowned 2 amateur champions by pitting the #1 ranked fighter against the #2 ranked fighter in their respective weight classes. Since then my interest has been piqued and I've been grappling with my original impressions of it and my attraction to shiny things -- like belts and bragging rights.

So yeah, what do you guys think? Is it silly, is it worthwhile, or does it not even matter? What impact do you think it will have on the local scene?

I personally predict that people will start to stay amateur longer in order to vy for a belt before they go pro. Around here, most go pro after 2-4 fights, but I noticed MMA forum's own Jeremy Myers (Kamikaze) has had like 14 fights before he went pro...and he owned several belts. Though I don't know for sure, I bet a lot of guys out in his way have a similar amount of amateur experience, and I would think that it is because ammy titles are available in his region.

Highly opinionated but out of touch with the current MMA scene.

amateur titles show reward for ammy fighters and give you something to work for in the organizations you fight for. They have gotten pretty watered down though but the idea is def good especially for promotions who put on primarily amateur bouts. Helps you get sponsors, and more money for your initial pro bouts.

I think they are great, they give people that extra competitive incentive, show a reward, something to work hard and aim for and give you extra motivation and push.

Thanks to Leakler for the sig

Around here I feel like it's already getting watered down even though its only existed for a couple of months. 1 promotion did it and now every other promotion is talking about setting them up.

Btw in your area, what would you say is the average number of fights that an ammy takes before going pro?

I like the idea. You can tell most are just handed out to the fighters that stick around for more than 2 fights. But It add a little excitement to the events. There are 3 orgs here in Ms and all 3 have titles. I think its something you can add to your background once you go pro and are looking to get into the bigger promotions

I love the idea, just like any other professional sport, there are ammy leagues and rankings. Of course it works slightly different for every sport but lets look at hockey for example. The best most established rookies are drafted into the NHL (Usually in order that they are ranked).

If the same type of system worked in MMA (Not drafting but prospects) then ammy fighters could be known before even going pro and helping themselves get into the big name promotions right off the bat, also making them more money and better sponsorship deals.

I heard a rumour that a local Org was starting to do Ammy titles and the 2 fighters fighting for one of the titles are both coming off losses... that's legit!

Well I am sure its because the two real #1-#2 contenders went pro just before this intergration. I am sure they could have found ammy fighters coming off wins though lol.
