Franklin-Kampmann at UFC 72 not confirmed
By Chad Edward on April 13, 2007
"Absolutely nothing has been confirmed regarding Rich's next fight," J.T. Stewart, Rich Franklin's media contact, told MMAFighting.com Saturday in response to rumors of a Franklin versus Martin Kampmann main event at UFC 72 in Ireland June 16.
"Rich is in Alaska and is not in contact with anyone," Stewart continued, "Nothing has been decided. Period."
Both Franklin and Kampmann earned stoppages at UFC 68 in Columbus, Ohio last month. Franklin's second round TKO of Jason MacDonald was his successful return from a brutal beating inside Anderson Silva's Thai clinch. Kampmann's first round submission of Drew McFredies by arm triangle was his eighth consecutive victory, the last three coming in the UFC.
Kampmann, like UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, is a Muay Thai fighter with submissions and would challenge Franklin to successfully defend the Thai clinch.
Silva is slated to make his second title defense July 7 at UFC 73 versus Nate Marquardt. Yushin Okami, who holds a disqualification victory over Silva, defeated top contender, Mike Swick, at UFC 69 in Houston Saturday night.
A request for comment from Martin Kampmann is unanswered at this time.
