Manny Ramirez

Looks like Manny's days in LA are pretty much numbered?? I'm pretty sure the Dodgers are kicking themselves for re-signing him for that astronomical 20 million dollars last year? It will be pretty hard though for a team to acquire him from the Dodgers though, since he has a Full no trade clause.

Quote:
MILWAUKEE -- Manny Ramirez, who was in left field and batted third against the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night, might have been playing his final game for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ramirez had a scheduled day off and was out of the lineup for Thursday's 7-1 win over the Brewers, and there is a strong chance he could be traded to the Chicago White Sox.

Ramirez

The Dodgers placed Ramirez on waivers Wednesday, sources told ESPN.com.

The two clubs already are discussing a possible trade involving Ramirez despite the fact the veteran left fielder won't clear waivers until Friday, a source with knowledge of the situation said on Wednesday. Although the Dodgers can't officially trade Ramirez to the White Sox, or to any other team, until the waiver process is complete, the teams are engaged in talks in anticipation that either the White Sox will secure a waiver claim on Ramirez or Ramirez will clear waivers.

MLB teams have until Friday afternoon to put in a claim on Ramirez. National League teams will have the first chance to claim Ramirez. Waiver rules require that he pass through all NL clubs first before AL teams have an opportunity to put in a claim.

Any team that's awarded the claim would have until Tuesday afternoon to work out a trade with the Dodgers.

"It's not easy to get anything [done] and that's why the [July 31] trading deadline is so important," White Sox general manager Kenny Williams told ESPNChicago.com. "You try to make sure you fortify your team and you exhaust yourself to do it because you just don't know what the waiver wire will yield, and this year, it seems like there have been more blocks than there have been in the past."

Even if the Dodgers and White Sox -- or another team -- were to agree on a trade, Ramirez could nullify the deal under the no-trade rights granted him by his current two-year, $45 million contract, which expires after the season.

If he vetoed a deal, the Dodgers would be required to pull him back from waivers -- and could not trade him for the remainder of this season.

It's also possible Ramirez would ask for compensation if he approves a trade or waiver claim.

Ramirez refused to comment before Wednesday's game.

Dodgers manager Joe Torre said Wednesday he believes Ramirez would prefer to remain with the Dodgers for the rest of the season, although that falls well short of predicting that Ramirez will reject a trade.

"Manny has always expressed that," Torre said. "I know he has had a tough year. I think what will help him right now is just to get a few hits in a game, and all of a sudden, things will feel a lot better, I'm sure."

Any team that makes a waiver claim on Ramirez runs the risk of being on the hook for the roughly $4.3 million remaining on his contract if the Dodgers simply let him go.

However, teams are not convinced the Dodgers would dump Ramirez's contract on any club that claims him. The Dodgers, rather, are likely to explore a trade in which they pick up some of the money but receive a prospect or prospects in return, sources tell ESPN.com's Jayson Stark.

By waiting for Ramirez to clear waivers and then working out a trade, which presumably would involve a couple of minor league prospects going back to the Dodgers, the White Sox could get the Dodgers to pay a significant portion of what Ramirez is owed.

The structure of Ramirez's contract might make him more attractive to teams interested in the slugger. Any team that makes a move for Ramirez would owe him a prorated portion of his $20 million salary. However, about three-quarters of his salary is deferred.

If a team were to acquire Ramirez, it would owe him only $1.1 million for the rest of this season and about $3.3 million in deferred salary.

On Tuesday, a league source told ESPNChicago.com that the Chicago White Sox would put in a claim on Ramirez once he hit waivers. FoxSports.com first reported the White Sox intended to make a claim.

White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski supported the idea of putting in a claim on Ramirez.

"Sure, why not? He's one of the best right-handed hitters in all of baseball of all time," Pierzynski said on "The Afternoon Saloon" on ESPN 1000. "How can you not say, 'I want Manny Ramirez on my team.' That's something that would never be said. As long as he's healthy and he can play, it's impossible to say you don't want Manny Ramirez."

Ramirez, a 12-time All-Star, has played in just 63 games for the Dodgers this season and has been on the disabled list three times, twice because of a right calf strain. He was most recently activated on Saturday, after which he went 0-for-7 with three strikeouts in his first two games.

looks like he might end up in chicago http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/ml...ory?id=5503956
now they just got to work out a deal for him

Quote:
The clock started ticking on Manny Ramirez's future as a Dodger on Friday, when the Chicago White Sox were awarded a waiver claim that gives them exclusive rights to make a deal to acquire Ramirez over the next four days.

Ramirez

The teams have until 1:30 p.m. ET Tuesday to complete a trade.

According to a source monitoring the waiver wire, the White Sox were one of three teams to claim Ramirez after the Dodgers placed him on trade waivers Wednesday.

The Texas Rangers also claimed the 38-year-old future designated hitter, a source told ESPNDallas.com's Richard Durrett.

And there were strong indications the other team to claim Ramirez was the Tampa Bay Rays. But the White Sox had first dibs because they had the lowest winning percentage among the American League teams that put in a claim. None of the other 15 National League teams claimed him.

Ramirez was not in the Dodgers' starting lineup Friday against the Rockies, raising further speculation he could be on his way out of Los Angeles, although Dodgers manager Joe Torre insisted he didn't start Ramirez because of a tough matchup against Rockies ace Ubaldo Jimenez.

"It's a couple of reasons," Torre said. "One is he hasn't played that much, and Jimenez is tough. The other one is that he is 1-for-13 with six ... strikeouts against him."

Torre said he plans to start Ramirez on Saturday night.

"My guess is yeah," Torre said.

Now that the waiver portion of the process is out of the way, there are four potential outcomes between now and Tuesday:

• The Dodgers and White Sox could work out a trade in which each team pays a portion of the approximately $4.4 million remaining on Ramirez's contract this year, and the White Sox send a player or players to the Dodgers in return.

"It's somewhat of a gamble if you are willing to step out there like we sometimes are," White Sox general manager Kenny Williams said Friday night, speaking generally about potential moves to improve the team. "Like we often are, in the situation we are. In a two- or three-day period, you can find yourself further back and wonder whether or not you've done the right thing."

• The Dodgers could simply let the White Sox take Ramirez and assume all of his salary, most of which ($3.3 million) is deferred.

• The teams could work out a deal, only to have Ramirez opt not to waive his no-trade clause and veto the deal. That's viewed as unlikely, but there have been reports this week Ramirez could ask for a contract extension in order to approve any trade.

"Generally speaking, you approach the player only when you have a deal in place," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said. "I'm just talking in total generalities, not about any specific player. There are a lot of players who have been claimed by a lot of teams, and I would say 95 percent of them are still with the club that put them on waivers."

• The Dodgers could decide they're too close in the wild-card race to trade away their No. 3 hitter and pull Ramirez back. The Dodgers finished sweeping three games in Milwaukee to pull within five games in the wild-card race, and they still have four games against teams ahead of them in that race -- Colorado and Philadelphia -- before the Tuesday deadline.

Until the past several days, a Ramirez deal appeared inevitable, once he returned to the active roster following a stint on the disabled list for a calf injury. But the Dodgers, who had been eight games back in the wild-card standings and 12 behind in the NL West as recently as Sunday, might have changed their front office's thinking with their first series sweep since the last week of June.

Speaking with reporters in the dugout before Friday night's game at Colorado, Colletti gave no indication as to whether he was on the verge of trading Ramirez to the White Sox, according to ESPNLosAngeles.com's Tony Jackson.

Colletti told USA Today earlier this week that he was "not inclined" to trade any players at a point when the Dodgers are on the fringes of contention for a playoff spot.

Asked about that comment Friday, Colletti said, "That was where I was at the time."

Asked where he is now, Colletti said, "I'm in the same place right now."

Asked what could possibly change that before next week, Colletti said, "How we play."

Other teams that have spoken with the Dodgers said they've shown no inclination to trade any of their veteran players this month -- and have consistently told those clubs they wanted to wait to see where they were in the standings at the end of August.

So the club held off until Wednesday to place Ramirez on waivers in order to give itself the most possible time to consider its options. One source who spoke with the Dodgers reported they saw "no reason to rush" to trade Manny or anyone else, until they get a better feel for whether they're legitimately in contention. So it would be surprising if they made any final decision on Ramirez either way until the deadline approaches.

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was asked Friday how adding Ramirez would affect team chemistry.

"If this kid comes here, we have rules and we're going to go by the rules. Jerry [Reinsdorf] has his rules, Kenny [Williams] has his rules and the team has its rules," Guillen said. "My rules are going to be done because we've had the same rules for a few years and he's got to go by it. I will talk to him like I talked to Ken Griffey Jr. and like I've talked to guys coming to this ballclub and what I like to do. Believe me, if this kid comes here, it's because he wants to. That's a good thing."

Guillen had already given some thought to how he'd play Ramirez.

"I have to see him. He can DH, hopefully he can play a little bit in the outfield," he said. "Manny only plays left field, and I've got a good one playing right now. I'm not going to take any at-bats or any playing time from Juan Pierre to give Manny."

They were saying on MLB network that he wants a contract extension on the table before he'll waive his no trade clause, might be hard for a team to bite on that hook LOL.

Now that the White Sox have been awarded the waiver claim on Manny Ramirez, according to several sources, they have until Tuesday to work out a deal with the Dodgers, who may have a clearer indication by then of whether they are in or out of playoff contention.

Nothing will happen over the weekend, according to one source familiar with the proceedings, allowing both sides to assess where they are and exactly what they need. The Dodgers, who are five games out of the National League wild card race and play the Rockies this weekend, have the choice of making a deal or pulling Ramirez off waivers and keeping his $4 million-plus salary for the rest of the season.

It is not clear of what details the White Sox and Dodgers have worked out previously, but the prospect Los Angles would receive back from the Sox would depend on how much of Ramirez's salary the Dodgers want to pay. In the original talks before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, the Sox were to pay less than half the salary, according to sources.

The Sox did claim him, and were awarded the claim. what progresses from here i dunno whats gonna happen tho.

http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com...s-excited.html

Quote:
CLEVELAND -- General manager Ken Williams said Manny Ramirez was excited to join the White Sox following a waiver claim from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"He's excited," Williams said in a conference call. "He's a funny guy, too. But he's excited and really wanted to get going and get back on the field and how he wanted to show he's one of the premier hitters around. And what better way to do it than come to a club that's competing for a championship."
Williams said Ramirez never asked for a contract extension, and Williams said Ramirez will agree to the Sox's dress code.

"From my understanding, it won't be an issue," Williams said. "He'll comform to how we want our players represented out there."

Williams said the Sox were more willing to pay the balance of Ramirez's contract -- about $4 million spread through 2013 -- than give up minor league players that would have reduced their financial obligations.

"He didn't ask for anything," Williams said. "All he wanted to do was play and communicated to me he wanted to win."

Williams said chairman Jerry Reinsdorf approved of his intentions to add an impact bat that could get the Sox deep into the playoffs.

Williams said he would keep an open mind in considering Ramirez, a free agent, for next season but stressed that he had 2010 in mind with his acquisition.
i was kinda apprehensive about this before, you know which Manny gonna show up? But looks like he wants to make everyone shut up and gonna play nice for the rest of the season. This could be very good for my beloved White Sox..... now im really interested. Now if only we could get a couple bullpen guys to clear waivers.....
