Fighting a grappler

Im a little over 3 weeks out and im a standup fighter, im fighting a a bjj guy with just a highschool wrestling backround. I feel confident im my gameplan and ive been working a lot of wrestling and getting up. No I am not looking to make any drastic changes by posting this im simply just looking for any last few week advice and or principles/tips when fighting a ground guy.
Ive been working the obvious like keeping him on the end of my punches and assuming a more lower stance,also not standing infront of him.
Anyone else have ANY kind of knowledge or something that works good for you to avoid the takedown and get the ko?

Im not great and all but heres my ideas if you have a grappler keep being in and out and when you go out sideways move so he cant get a hold of your legs change your stances keep him guessing so he has to change the takedown he goes for always watch the kicks incase he catches them but destroying his lead leg would be a clever idea if youre a good at Thai Clinching knee his lead leg quick and get out so he has troubles taking you down

The best advice I can give is to not over commit right out of the gate. Stick to one or two straight punches and keep a low base and prepare to sprawl. If you feel your back is getting close to the cage make sure to circle out towards the center so you can't get pinned. Just pick him off and angle when he shoots, eventually you'll catch him in a bad position and be able to capitalize on his mistakes. Good luck!

Check out the best e.g. check out the way Junior Dos Santos and Jose Aldo avoid takedowns and get back up once taken down.

These guys in Brazil often have to get by without much wrestling so they are pretty advanced at getting around the TDD VS wrestler problem.

Alot of people have already said this but here's my advice.

Work your sprawls.
You aren't going to learn all the wrestling counters and what not, much less be able to effectively use them as good as he does, in time for your fight. Sprawling is much easier to learn and much more effective in amateur.

Footwork.
Work yourself in the cage and practice cutting angles to get off the cage. He might not be able to get you down in the open, but if he can get you up against the cage he will have a much better chance implying his takedowns.

MOST IMPORTANTLY.
Don't get caught up in the idea that he's coming out there to take you down. Be ready to counter whatever his gameplan is. You come out in a low stance, he fakes a TD, and counters your sprawl.. and your shitted on. Be ready to stand in bang for 3 rounds. His wrestling will probably become his backbone, and if he decides to pull guard, just play defensive. Chances are he is only a blue belt, and you will be able to survive in his guard while inflicting damage. Just be careful, posture up, throw some bombs, and if he attempts anything stand up.

Although helpful, watching UFC fights isn't going to help you THAT much. You really have to understand that almost everything that is happening is a technique followed by a counter. If you don't know the technique, you won't know the counter. Also amateur and pro have different rules which im about to point out in the quote below.

The plum, although useful, isn't very effective in amateur, especially vs a grappler, for 2 reasons.

1. You can't knee to the head. (In most states atleast)
2. Because you can't knee to the head, you have to knee to the body or legs so they have more of an idea where you are going to strike, and when facing a grappler, you don't want them catching that knee and taking you down.


(Knees and elbows to the head are illegal in amateur within most states.)

As a grappler myself, I think that your best bet is to keep moving, and most importantly, DON'T LET HIM GRAB ANYTHING.

If he's any good, he knows that there's a couple of things he can do with everything he grab.

Also, beware of the takedown. Us BJJ guys also have unorthodox takedowns which have nothing to do with wrestling.

Watch Jose Aldo and Junior Dos Santos imo they have the best TDD as of late. Especially watch how they turn away then sprint away.

The best thing to do is not WORRY about his grappling don't let this guy put fear into your technique if your fighting in a cage stay off the cage take the center if your in a ring stay out of the corners and the ropes and take the center the more you go to the body with the jab (jabbing at the chest and the mid section and hooking to the body) it pushes him back try to every now and again work the uppercut no matter if it lands it will make him think of shooting low and no leg kicks stick with the boxing and dont fight of your back if you go down work to defend and get up with the underhook

Elbows and knees will defeat takedowns. Just don't miss. : )

Most of the advice you will receive is defensive. Here is some offensive advice:

1. Most fighters have not mastered their elbow strikes. These are one of the most effective weapons in MMA because there is no padding. The reason you see much damage from elbows from standing position is that when elbow strikers have good timing, they can knock out a grappler that is coming in for the takedown. Try training with elbow pads and just have your sparring partner perform takedowns on you, and only use your elbows. You will quickly see how effective this is, as you don't need to be as fast as you can already anticipate where his head is going to be.

2. Knee strikes are your friend. Once your opponent eats one good knee from you in his face while trying to take you down, he will start second guessing his takedowns. During sparring, wear knee pads and just practice knees while having your partner perform doubles and singles on you.
