Starting stand up training tomorrow

So when i joined i asked what i would need to do if i wanted to become a mma fighter and everyone said because i had a extensive wrestling background and was already training in bjj i should start taking stand up right away. well i couldnt start right away cause my bjj instuctor wanted me to concentatre on bjj for a tournament i entered last week. So now the time has come for me to start striking and so i was wondering what i should expect. My bjj instuctor has trined in muay thai and jeet kun do concepts so if anyone can let me know what they think i'm in for cause unlike going inot bjj i have no prior striking experience. Thanks

Muay Thai is very good for MMA.

Also you can look at Kickboxing and Boxing although if you can take Muay Thai and its a good gym...take it.

I was in the intremediate bracket but most of the guys in that bracket had been there for 3-4 years so they probally should have been in advanced. one of the guys i fought in the gi division went on to win the no gi absolute bracket. but i think i did ok for my first tourney. eventually the videos of the match will be onnline at brunosonlinegym.com

Muay thai is very good for MMA, get used to throwing knees in the clinch push your opponent down so that he will wanna push up then shake em as they lift up with a double leg take down straight into mount or side.

Careful though dont start throwing round house kicks and spinning with the kick in mid motion, this is so so so so so so so so wrong. In thai boxing they dont have to worry about being taken down but MMA you will be a victim everytime if you do this.

Practice sweeps as well, mainly a karate move but works wonders for throwing your opponent of target and getting the blind side.

The blind side is like full mount, always position yourself to attack here, so side stepping is a must.

And just like the ground, the standup is still very much like a chessgame just at a faster pace, so stamina is key, try to understand when your recovery period is, so important.

Thats pretty much a little intro Im still learning alot myself so dont take everything I say as gospel.

with your answer that would be my answer. don't worry about striking until your good at grappling. as a wrestler you can win vs a bjj, in a bjj trounament. takedown 2, pass guard 3, body control until time is up. in an mma match will you say, "i lost because he has been doing this for over 10 years he should be in the ufc, not this small unknow event...."
it is great to be an all around fighter, but even they have a strong point...

Boxing

Practice short punches on the inside. you could just shadow box, a lot on this no chuck ledel crap. Just pump your fists out there. If opponent starts getting the better of you just. go for the take down. This will probably make him put his hands up.

I can't agree with the 'just pump your fists out there' part. I say this for several reasons. One is that, a good striker will pick your apart for carelessly attacking. And, even worse, what if its a good striker with good takedown defense? ouch. Oh, and speaking of takedowns, a great time for THEM to do one is while you're throwing your arms around. they'll just drop levels and WHAM.

Though, I do agree with you about using striking as a lure to make him lift his hands... Its only the 'just pump your fists out there' part that I've got a problem with, as the phrasing insinuates very... imprecise punching.

But, going back to what this topic is about, is for what you should expect... This one almost goes without saying, but expect to get hit. In the face. Alot. Something that you can practice early on in striking, and if you do it comes in great handy later, is keeping your eyes open when you're getting punched in the face for as long as you can. That and, if its sparring, practice going right into counter attacks. If you can break out of the self-destructive habits (such as looking away from blows to the face or shelling up before its necessary), you'll save yourself ALOT of time.

Stand up

What I ment was short punches on the inside. Also, learn these counter punches, and you will be all set because if you catch him with one of these counter punches he will have to think twice about throwing.

Everything except the stance we want wider stance

Everything except the stance. on the video we want wide for takedown defense. Do you recomend getting hit? So you can get used to it? Ouch What does everyone else think about this?
