Tae Kwon Do

I know they use a point system, how does the point system work for TKD?

When I competed in TKD sparring tournaments I am pretty sure it is counted by a thrown:hit ratio and aggressiveness and I think that's all. When I wasn't competing I would watch and that's how it looked like it was scored to me because I would always guess the winner correctly based on those 2 things. Could be wrong, I didn't care at the time I just wanted to kick some ass...

I know nothing about TKD but along with the points how do you decide a winner.

You can find the WTF rules and Regulations for scoring here.

From Article 12. Valid Points

Quote:
1. Legal Scoring Areas
1) Mid-section of the trunk: The part covered by the trunk protector
2) Face: The whole part of the face including both ears

2. Points shall be awarded when permitted techniques are delivered accurately and powerfully to the legal scoring areas of the body.

3. The valid points are divided as follows.
1) One (1) point for attack on trunk protector
2) Two (2) points for attack on face.
3) One (1) additional point shall be awarded in the event that the contestant is knocked down and the referee counts.

4. Match score shall be the sum of points of the three rounds.

5. Invalidation of points: When a contestant performs an attack to score through the use of the prohibited acts, the points scored shall be annulled.
Pretty self explanatory there. The use of electronically scoring protection gear makes it even easier for bigger competitions.

It doesn't matter if you agree or disagree... As long as I don't bore you and I spark a moment of thought, my goal is achieved.

I got my start in full contact TKD about the same time I was getting started with BJJ. I have to admit, I don't really like the point system and I don't think of TKD as a particularly practical art. I'll stick with BJJ, thanks.

Yea I think TKD is extremely useful. Think about how much your reflexes improved since you started. At least it did for me I'm like a cat now haha. Plus I know how to punch and strike properly and the kicks come in handy too because they teach you the most vicious ways to land kicks and strikes. I think it would help a lot more in a street fight rather than the ring or octagon though. When I took classes for the nine years they started incorporating Akido at the green belt stage and from then on I can't really distinguish the TKD from the Akido I learned. All I know about the Akido was it's mostly throws and joint manipulation which is what I am extremely good at so I think maybe the Akido was more useful than the TKD a little bit. I do love telling my friends to take a swing at me so I can flip them over my shoulder hahaha!! I'm 5'6'' 135 lbs so it's funny to see someone my size flipping a guy over my shoulder that's much bigger than me.
