Need some feedback on my standup technique

hey guys just threw a vid up on youtube of some sparring i was doing earlier. it's just boxing so no kicks thrown since the guy i was sparring with is a boxer (although he used to be provincial champion so he's pretty good) just thought i'd get some feedback on my technique....haven't been out in a while since i'm at university and my club's back home and theres not many places close around here

any constructive feedback would be great....note the constructive part lol

thanks

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rMoDtMtU9U

ps a quarter of the vid is sideways since the guy filming is a tard...but it goes normal after a minute

What kind of striker are you trying to be? It seems like you want to be more of a counter puncher.

well sometimes i am and sometimes i'm more aggressive...i was counter punching here just because we were boxing and he used to be a pretty good boxer....if we were throwing kicks i'd be the aggressor but ya i was counterpunching here

For straight up boxing, your friend was looking to block your jab/hook. I would of tried to either faint a jab and thrown a right straight or just thrown a right straight. He was pretty quick to defend, but he wasn't really looking for you to throw a straight.

My two cents for what it's worth. You plant your feet too much. Kepp moving and stay on your toes. You explode much faster that way. When you want to throw a big punch just drop your heels. This way you can circle easier and move quicker. Another thing is you're pretty boxy here. Keep your hands moving at least a little bit as it will disguise punches much more and keep your head movement going so you dont get punched in the face as easy. It might be personal preference, but I keep my hands a little bit lower too. Usually my knuckes are right under my eyes or at eye line. This way you're a bit closer to your ribs when they throw body shots, but you arent too far from your temples to block. One more thing is that if you're going to counter punch you need to learn to slip past punches, blocking them just blocks them but if you slip them thats half their head that unprotected. Another thing my trainer talked to me about the other night, when you step in to throw flurries, dont back out, side step out so they have to turn to hit you. This way you have abit more time to cover back up and possibly a few more hits to the temple. Your hand speed is great though, for sure, and I'm not saying youre standing is bad at all, its pretty good, just needs fine tuning to make it great.

ex-bouncer has a little shameless behaviour in the past
Thumbs up

actually you have excellent defense I like how you keep your elbows in nice and tight like winky wright. It's just your foot work that needs work I recommend that you watch mike tyson fights since you appear to be a counter puncher. model his slip and slide.

thanks man....ya i know i'm not used to boxing...so much better when i can throw kicks because i can step the angles and come in when i throw them...it's been getting better though...i'll throw up another vid soon so maybe i can if i've improved on my footwork
