Take Downs

hi
i have chosen to train boxing as it is local and basic martial arts training.
i recently wotched "ICE MAN" fight and saw his take down and pound statergy. i was wondering which martial arts would improve take downs (if any) and if there were any other ways of traning it.

thanks lee

well...? By ice man i assume you mean Chuck Liddel, and he does'nt do much "take down" although he does do alot of pounding...if that makes sense. anywho, I am not a martial art's know it all by any means, but Judo has some of the best throw/takedown I'v ever learned....

For direct takedowns and ground control: Wrestling. Lots of amateur wrestling will help with takedowns and takedown defense.

For finishing on the ground: Jiu-Jitsu (Stadard JJJ or BJJ). On thing that wrestling enstills is a lot of bad habits that do not translate over well in a MMA scenario. In which case, Jiu-Jitsu will help a lot when it comes to finishing an opponent on the ground, or defending submission holds if you find yourself in a bad situation.

Judo also works really well.

Wrestling is one that would teach takedowns look at matt he was a ncaa wrestler and I can guarintee that he learned all his takedowns from amature wrestling. you can learn from books or ask a wrestleing coach to teach you or watch practice at highschools or colleges. I used to be a highscholl wrestler before I got into the mma and decided to expand my fighting knowege and it helps alot with takedowns that is mainly what wrestlin is. if you want to learn mma fighting it all revolves around 3 things strikeing (boxing, jeet kundo muy thai)graplling(wrestleing judo) and submition bjj.

Wrestling is great for straight entry takedowns and really help with jumping straight in at the legs, but it's really easy to defend against.

I suggest Judo, because the takedowns are much harder to avoid. I would learn basic wrestling takedowns, at least double leg and single leg takedowns if not some basic suplex skills.
