i always find myself kind of bouncing aroud in my standup stance. is this bad or good? should i stay on the balls of my feet but nice and calm with little or no movement?

Staying on your toes and moving helps you create angles for strikes and also helps you avoid strikes as well.

relaxed, cut the bouncing out, heels about a quarter inch off the ground.

in the words of teddy atlas "dont bounce, because you cant throw a punch until you come out of that bounce" after alot of practice youll understand how much sense that makes.

- Raise your heels off the ground (Muay Thai stance)

- Quick and short steps over long and slow ones

- Believe it or not, but the way I improved my footwork is by listening to some Michael Jackson music and looking straight down at my feet while trying to dance to the rhythm. Stupid? very, but hey it works

- Either do the "dancing" routine or simply put your hands behind your back and pay very close attention to you footwork. Remember bouncing makes you gas out easily!

Hope that helped.

Unlike what all these other dudes say, you can stay bouncing but, you have to be fast, you must have good reaction time, and must be kick oriented not punching as main.. the reasons for this is because, you gotta have quick thinking if your opponent is trying to catch you midair, and bouncing is a great way to keep your body lose, especially your legs, and the opponent cant read your kicks, also you gotta be fast cuz you cant bounce once a second and think it will help you, you gotta be constantly moving with your weapon, this is exactly same as why a butterfly knife works

Also please dont close your mind to only what others say, because 99% of these people are all muay thai fan heads, im sorry guys but only style your heads are open to is from muay thai, 'dont restrict yourself, open up yourself and take what is useful' similar to what bruce lee said....i forgot exact words..... basically bjj and muay thai aint the only martial arts out there...
