Regardless of the sciatic there are several nerves that run up the inside of your leg in the area where leg kicks land, while these theory's of causing nerve damage or spasms....

In short leg kicks keep your opponent off center and they are not able to create a solid base to counter from also it allows a fighter to keep distance.....not saying the nerve thing doesn't come into play, but it is not the main reason they are thrown.....

the inside leg kick is used basically as a jab , and trust me ive taken a few of these and after three or four your leg becomes heavy and you cant get the usual explosion on your attacks and it makes it very difficult to move and after a fight or sparring yur leg is pretty jacked up if they land right , imo a very under-utiliazed weapon in many strikers arsenals , it is one of my fave techniques.

The inside leg kick real purpose is to kick your opponent in the nuts, make sure you make it look like an accident and then say sorry to the ref and your opponent. Then get a warning (meanwhile youve devasted your opponent and got away with it. See Hughes - GSP, 3x and a zillion other fights. No really its a non risk move that keeps your opponent off balance, makes him uncomfortable and keeps him guessing. Great setup for an overhand right
