Switch hitting

I've been stuck in the UFC forum for too long and found this portion of the website while navigating.

Switch hitting, switching infight effectively between both orthodox and unorthodox, is a skill I haven't seen too many fighters use nowadays. I've decided to post this film for any who are interested in seeing a technician, who I believe to be one of the best both during his reign as MW champ til even now some 20 years after his retirement. And that's the Marvelous one, Marvin Hagler. This was a southpaw who could just as effecively fight (and would often switchhit infight) orthodox...AND with power! Enjoy this war fellas. I've always liked watching Hagler fight. I'm orthodox, usually, but I switch into southpaw sometimes to use my other leg for kicks and get my right hand, which has always been my stronger striking hand, closer to my opponent.

I shoot better from orthodox, but I've become comfortable striking and shooting, as well as clinching, from both. I feel like it adds another aspect to the game of confusing my opponent and taking them out of what they're used to.

if your able to switch from normal stance to southpaw or vice versa for south paws and be equally effective your much better off in long boxing fight

Uh huh, and dudes like you are the reasons why I train orthodox and unorthodox to keep you from switching strong sides to shoot from. LOL

Good stuff bro. Keeping that up just puts one more "trump" in your hand to play.

i work both ways on my heavy bag...jsut to get used to it and ambidextrous....but i usually stand southpaw because i shoot that way in wrestling...so i have a good right leg kick and jab and working on the cross now...

Yeah, I have a handful of trump cards that I go to in a fight if I need a takedown really bad. (takedowns are like crack, only free) Here's the short list: (these are pretty much in order)

Jabs, because you have to watch those to if you don't want to get KTFOd

Leg kicks until you stand up straight or start to slip

Stance switching quickly while using leg kicks and shots for both surprise and to give one of my shins a rest without giving you your's

Rushing at you into a judo clinch and use a hip toss or a judo throw from there

Thai clinches which I break to put me in a position to drop right down, pick up your knees and slam you

Flying elbows, their a distraction and they get me in close

switching is easy if youve trained to fight both ways from the begining. I hate it when I see people being trained to fight only one way. Depending on how a fight goes I will switch up for instance when I throw a kick I dont just recoil the kick and go back to a fighting stance. I think thats a waist of an oppertunity and energy. When I throw my kicks ill recoil and if I kicked with my back leg the back leg will then be the front leg and I would have switched.

The advantage in doing this is after the kick your oponent has thrown his weight back when you do that you close some distance and depending on your range your in an oppertunistic striking position. It works if you use alot of front kicks which alot of fighters dont use enough of. You cant really do it with a shin kick.

I cant imagine NOT training both orthodox and unorthodox. We train and fight in MMA which means there is a ton of ways to give a fighter an edge, I think being able to change your stance back and forth in a fight and be comfortable doing it is another way of giving yourself an edge. I am really glad to hear you guys practice doing that as well

I tried switching in training and it confused the f**k out of me. So I stopped. Brandon Vera switches alot but not too many others do it. In fact I can't recall anybody of the top of my head.

I was actually suprised when I found out awhile ago that most people dont. I guess its because alot of people cross train in boxing which in and of itself is very limited because its a sport so it has to constrain itself to the rules of the sport.
