Huge 0 Boss has a little shameless behaviour in the past
New To It All...

hey guys i could use a little bit of advice, I've been a huge fan of MMA for the past few years. Not just for the fact of people beating the shit outta each other lol, but the mental game as well. I'm wanting to start training. Not to be on TUF 11 or anything lol. Just think its a good goal to work towards. My question guys is what are some of the basics of fighting i could work on. I've obiviously never been in an MMA fight. A few fist fights, but def. not something to base fighting skills off of. I've also been told before by a friend who does some MMA training that he thought my arms would be too short for even practicing MMA (i'm built like a f*cking T REX, Short arms,big body and big head lol) Is there any truth to this. I don't put much faith in his insight, seeing as he's fought 7 amature fights and lost all but 1 of them.

Dont listen to any of that bullshit about body type and build, if you wanna train then train. Find a good gym and start taking some classes. There are tons of people who train in mma that have no intention of ever competeting. It is a lot of fun to do regardless of whether your trying to become the next Anderson Silva or you just want to get in shape and learn some cool stuff. If you ever did wanna compete, dont worry about your natural limitations. There are plenty of guys that are successful that dont have a massive reach. Sean Sherk, Jeff Monson, etc. If you wanna do it, then just do it bruddah. Life is short, live it.

thanks for the push man appreciate it..and yea the reason i wanna get into it, kinda personal, less than a year ago i was 385 lbs, i'm now down to 295 lbs, and wanna do something to challege myself that obiviously i couldn't have done before at nearly 400 lbs. But i hear what your saying i mean i've also talked to a few guys at the gym i lift weights at that are into boxing that said i would be good for fit for a puncher/boxer. due to my build, and not to listen to the other guy about my arms being short. while my arms are only 25.5 inches. my back is 23 inches wide. so that helps my reach. So roughly 74 inch reach they also said that i would be able to probably take some good punches due to me having such a big neck, i think its 20.5 inches last time i got measured for a tux. they were telling me how a large neck helps absorb blows to the head. is there any truth to any of that? also is 74inches really that short of a reach?

Like Joshua said; find a gym you like and go from there. The workouts will do wonders for you if you stick with it!! Don't worry about the reach thing. When you have time on the mat, 6 months to a year, and if you have the urge to compete, then bring it up to your coach and pick their brain. Until that point arrives its pretty mych a non issue IMO. Have fun, learn the basics, and go from there.

dude 74 inch reach is awesome man my reach is only 68 inches.....but i am only 155 but 74 is fine and ive heard that to about the thick neck absorbing punches i dont know if its true though but alota people say it.
you sound like a beast just get a lean diet high in fiber and protein and do buttloads of cardio you will be amazed.

Dude, I'm in your boat. I have a proportionately larger torso and head than the rest of me. However I have managed to sucessfully handle everyone I've fought--shittiness of local fighters not withstanding.

I don't know my arm length but I'm 202 with arms too short for my body, or for anyone else's. Meaning I'm well within most of my opponent's reach before I can tag them with a solid cross, or even with a decent hook.

Its brought on an advantage in hind-sight. The need to get in so close has done wonders for my guard as well as with my aggression and accuracy. I know that I have to have a total picture of my opponents helps with my choreographing and anticipation. I've even in one case managed to react to an opponent before he even acted. But he was easily choreographed--and really bad.

All in all, body proportions mean nothing. You find your niche as you continue to train. Your strengths come out early and with focus you can be whipping asses in less than a year--depending on effectiveness of local fighters.

thanks man appreciate, how tall are you ?? if your 155 i'm guessing somewhere around 5'7 to 5'9 ?? for that height 68 inches would seem pretty good to me. I'm about 6'2

thanks man appreciate it. a few people have said they thought i would be good in some sort of fighting. mainly because i don't panic, when they've seen me get into fights and stuff. Again in no way am i making a comparison of throwing hands in a street fight to stepping into an MMA fight, but i'm sure sound judgment is key in any fight situation you choose.

Find a gym that will train you in a striking art, a grappling art, and basic boxing, eat lean protein and complex carbs (which you've probably already been doing in order to lose so much weight) and you'll be well on your way.
