Hope you guys enjoy!!! |
I think body shots are really only effective to specific areas IMO. The kidneys, the liver, the diaphram. Have I missed anything important?

Yeah, I forgot ribs. Even if its not enough to actually crack a rib, which is freakin terrible to deal with! The impact alone can shock the air from the lungs and kill the endurance momentarily. Which in many cases is all that's needed! |
Scott Smith vs. Pete Sell. Almost perfect example...

I for one do not like the body blow. Unless its with kicks or knees. I prefer to stay on the outside, not to mention I feel like I get hit a lot more in the face when I routinely go to the body with my hands. I do not like being hit in the face, its pretty and I plan to keep it that way :D
Don't get me wrong I will occasionally end a combination with a right hand to the body as im leaving striking range. But I feel so much safer ending combinations with a kick to the body/leg. |
Granted, I do not do as much stand-up technique as many of you do, but like the post above, I do not use the body shot that often. WHen I do, it is usually a feint and not much of a power shot. Just do it quickly to send a message, without the intention of finishing it.
Really, the only time I go for powerful body shots is when the fighter is covered up and there is little threat of a counter. If I have a guy backed into the corner and he is covering up his head, I will throw a strong liver shot. Other than that I stick to kicks and knees. |

I completely agree with tc.Body shots are the single most underused super weapon in mma. The damage they do is horrendous and i actually would prefere to get punched in the face than my body and it's not always true that a hard body shot can't knock you out. They are extremely effective , given that they are set up right. Junior Dos Santos really puts the body shot to great use. Both body kicks and body punches need to be used more especially since few fighters are used to defending them and are not expecting them. Plus if your opponent has to defend against punches , takedowns AND body shots , it will put more pressure on him. In my opinion the safest way to hit a body punch is to do it at the middle of a combination , because if you do it at the beginning or end you are vulnerable to counter attack.
