Personally, Shotokan Karate with Judo in addition or Muay Thai and wrestling or BJJ...

This is my boy. I love cc420, hes the dude.

But here and now, I must disagree even though I greatly respect his opinion.

Karate is worthless in my experience. Find a boxing, kickboxing or muay thai gym for your stand up. Wrestling is great for mma, however pure wrestling (like me) is not. Good to learn some, but better to learn bjj.

I started in Karate when I was 8 and it really helped me with the fundamentals. You know, turning the hips on kicks and throwing punches correctly. It also gave me a system in which to gauge my progress. But I have found Muay Thai Kickboxing to be much more helpful. Muay Thai is great for MMA, mixed with some defensive wrestling and a good jiu-jitsu game from your back. Because in Muay Thai, if you are throwing kicks and knees, you will most likely be taken down at one point or another. Getting back up quickly or hitting a sub is a great way to make use of that weakness.

i personally use a blend of tae kwon do/boxing, but anything i throw below the ribs is generally a thai style kick, takes a while to get used to the change in footwork but i find it to be rather effective
