Muay thai leg kicks help

Hey everyone. Ive been training in muay thai for about a month now and im still having trouble kicking a leg kick pad. when I kick i rotate my hip and everything like i would kick thai pads and i can do that fine. but when i kick a leg kick pad i feel like my foot is being bent away and it huts really bad. any tips or a step by step guide would be helpful. thanks in adavance

sounds like your making to much contact with your ankle than with your shin. could you make a video? i know it sounds hard but if oyu got a friend to hold a pillow take a vid.

Your point of contact is the top 4-6" of your shin. Also bend your leg a little.

For your leg strikes don't you want to have your point of contact being the point where the foot meets the ankle?

If not why not?

well i do kick just right above the ankle to below my knee. ideally you want to be somewhere inbetween, but i find it usually depends entirely on what range i happen to be in. avoid the foot and if its hurting your ankle etc land a little bit higher imo.

Focusing your contact on where the foot and ankle meet is a good way to get your foot broken, plus is is not nearly as damaging. The hardest part of your shin is right below your knee. There are "slap" kicks that do use the top of your foot but these are mostly used as set ups or distractions.

How do you thrust the hip out to gain reach when you do the thai roundhouse?

as everyone it has said it sounds like you hitting with the top of you foot and ankle instead of shin.

The spacing/distance of your kick is based on where you step with your other leg. This takes alot of practice because of the different "body types" people have. It gets more complicated in a sparring/fight scenario where people are moving around. I can tell you from experience that hitting with your foot on a checked kick really sucks!! LOl

easy enough, be closer when you throw the kick
your foot shouldn't really touch the pad very much at all, in any event not enough to bend it back
the Shin is the weapon, the foot just happens to be attached
