Striking while moving backwards
How can I strikes while moving backwards like Anderson Silva did to Forrest Griffin and what are some drills to do it
To my knowledge only two people have ever executed it properly. And Ali is the only one to ever talk about the use of it. I can't find any videos or descriptions of exercises to perfect the technique.
My suggestion would be to perform the techique slowly, and repeatedly one step at a time. Start with the footwork, then the footwork and the body movement, then the footwork, body movement, head movement, then finish it off by actually throwing the punch at the end. Do it slowly over and over again, until you can get the motion down.
Once the motion makes sense, start to slowly amp up the speed.
Do you have any striking experience at all¿ If not, go to a gym and learn basic footwork and striking first.
The key for the backward walking punch to inflict damage is that the forward momentum of your opponent has to be bigger than your backward momentum. Then your punch must be very precise right on the button and your opponent shouldn't be prepared to get hit.
So training wise you have to pay really much attention on your timing, the synchronization of your movement to your opponent's movement and the precision of your punches. You can try to train it with your trainer holding the mitt walking towards you while you do evasive movements and out of these hitting the mitt.
But don't expect to knock people out like Ali or Silva. There is a reason why they are considered the greatest of their time.
Seriously, if you really want to go out of your way to drill this specifically, then drill it on the mitts or heavy bag. Not sure what specific "drills" you're looking for. When you hit the heavy bag and it's swinging backwards, move in on it, then when it starts to come back to you, work your footwork backwards and land whatever you plan/hope to land. Or if you're working mitts with a partner, then just have them drive you backwards for (X) amount of strikes before you switch it up and toss your counters.
Good luck OP, good luck.
Thank you everybody for your posts I will try all of the drills and practice
