a good punch has just as much to do with mechanics as strength (I'm sure I'll get flamed for that) a lot of power comes from the hips/abs and planting the feet/twisting motion. Workout for core strength and practice punching a lot. When you hit the bag a lot the bones in your hands and forarms grow more dense which results in harder fists. Knuckle push-ups also help achieve more density in the bones of the hand.

Check your local buy & sell papers or Craig's list to see if someone is getting rid of an old one for cheap. Save your money and it will mean so much more.

yard sales, newspaper, classified adds, ebay.com.... oh yes when you do get a heavy bag, DO buy somehand wraps, otherwise you'll split you knuckles.
