Dude. I'm built like Snoop Dogg. My 1rm isn't even 200lbs. I have failed before, and you know what I do? I rest the bar on my chest for a short while and then press it. When I failed my 4th rep with 170 and it crashes down on me and destroys my ribs, I'll let you know, till that time I feel pretty safe.
If I am at some stage benching 300lbs+, will I always use a spotter? Of course. Till that time, I'm really not putting myself in that much danger.(obviously, before you say it, that was an exaggeration)
