Anyway, I'm not disagreeing with you, spotters are good. But it's not true that you can always get a spotter. I used to work out at home all the time, spotters were not available.
you couldn't have gotten a friend/family member to spot for you?

I do push spotters pretty strongly. If I were going to work out at home and didn't have a friend that would do it with me I'd put an ad on craigslist for a lifting partner or not use a barbell.

no spotter? Use dumbells=problem solved.

I workout at home and don't use a spotter, that's what the catch guard is for.

I do, when I go below a 3rm.

Well, I would, except that would be over cautious and unnecessary.

I used to be able to bench 250, but since I herniated two discs in my spine, I haven't tried.

if you feel comfortable to lift without a spotter that's the reason you're not getting the gains you're looking for in your log .

Eh no. Are you suggesting I'd make better gains if I trained to failure all the time?

if you feel comfortable to lift without a spotter when your goal is to bulk you are in no way lifting enough weight. I'm saying you should be pushing yourself. even if it's not failure if you aren't rocked in your last set you're doing it wrong.

Dude. I'm built like Snoop Dogg. My 1rm isn't even 200lbs. I have failed before, and you know what I do? I rest the bar on my chest for a short while and then press it. When I failed my 4th rep with 170 and it crashes down on me and destroys my ribs, I'll let you know, till that time I feel pretty safe.

If I am at some stage benching 300lbs+, will I always use a spotter? Of course. Till that time, I'm really not putting myself in that much danger.(obviously, before you say it, that was an exaggeration)

My 1RM is 245 at 238 BW

I know I need to work on it, but I've got too much fat on me right now I really should be at around 200/205 BW.
