I'll second this.
People should laugh at you if you own a smith machine. Barbell squats, deads, presses and powercleans (aka Starting Strength) are best. If you've still got money to burn, buy a power rack.

Also, free-weight training has one of the lowest incidences of sport related injuries. Even WITH all the jackholes that do it wrong.
