GSP Does Not Do Strength and Conditioning! Should you?
I found it very odd that GSP told Joe Rogan on Ultimate Insider that he does not believe in strength and conditioning. Should all fighters drop this?
Here's an S&C trainer's comments on the topic: Quote:

very odd indeed. i wouldn't be able to stop my strength training, wouldn't feel right.

I'm not too terribly surprised by this, to be honest. Interesting, still, but not surprising. What's not said is that he's not doing strength and conditioning, NOW.
GSP is a top tier fighter who's been studying martial arts for 20+ years, and has been fighting professional for, I think, eight years or so. And during that time, he was probably doing strength and conditioning. Hell, you can see training montages on youtube that include him strength training. However, the dude is probably strong as an ox now, and is in a lower weight class. What that means is that he literally can't put on much, if any, more muscle without being forced up in weight. Cool find though. -North |
Having read this I say: Thank god for GSP's trainers. Because he doesn't know jack about working out.
He may not do those snazzy bench presses or powercleans. But he does develop his strength/explosiveness and condition his muscles. He does half a dozen different kinds of pushups from what can be determined by an even cursory Youtube search. Same can be said for those hurddles and box jumps they always focus on during his Countdown montages. He uses resistance bands for sprints for explosive movements overall. He's constantly doing strength and conditioning. He apparently doesn't know the difference between general strength and conditioning vs weight lifting. I am very disappoint son, very disappoint. |

I guess he's referring to something like powerlifting, which is aimed at increasing your maximum lift. Shit, push-ups are strength training if you want to get technical, but I think he's referring to a specific type of training (high weight low reps) And he does make a valid point abut efficiency though. I can out punch guys who are WAY stronger than me - because of technique. I hit harder, longer. As their skill develops they will eventually overtake me, that's why I'm training strength as well. But since he already trains explosive movements, and already knows how to recruit maximal force, he probably wouldn't get much out of it. |

Even though he says he doesn't do any S&C, I highly doubt that's the full truth.

I'm really not sure what the hell GSP is talking about.
We've all seen you do S&C Georges. It's like he suddenly forgot he's been shown training countless times. The guy does Olympic lifting during his camp ffs. |
He does do S & C. There are hours of videos on youtube with GSP doing S & C...
