Agreed.
You have a fan that sits directly over the cpu, and another fan for your power supply. Could be one or the other but sounds like former (cpu/motherboard).
Power supply would have been cheaper to fix ($80). Too bad. My sister had a crap power supply. The fan inside broke, so her computer would start up and then shut down after 5-10 seconds.
Anyways, enzi's answer is what I'd go with.
If you don't want to bring it in just open it up and look for the fan on the motherboard to see if it's running. If it is then check the power supply. You'd have noticed the PC to be a little more quiet, or at least I would have....damn loud PC's >:|
