There is also a version of memtest that work in windows and does a very good job as well.

Looks like attention & adminmma have things under control here, but I will drop back by every once in awhile to throw in my 2 cents.

Well my computer, an old 2001 compaq went all blue screen on me one day so whenever I keep restarting is always shows this blue screen and when I try to put in my windows xp download disk it says some kind of thing is missing. How do I fix it without spending money?

If I wanted to build a new PC for just gaming, what is the first thing to buy? I would like to play MMORPG but my comp right now is crap for gaming? Any parts I need, I can pick them up at Fry's.

Would a faster processor speed up the PC or is RAM better for speed?

Well you're going to have to spend money unfortunately. My notion would be that your RAM or hard drive is beginning to fail. If there is 2 sticks of RAM in it, try pulling each one out seperately & running it on a single stick. If not, go buy a new one and slap it in there. If you still have a problem I would try a new hard drive. Typically when the PC says something is missing it is one of the storage devices misfiring & causing things to not be read properly. Congrats man, you have a PC with ADHD...lol

First thing to buy would be an appropriate video card & enough RAM. You need a minimum of 2gb of RAM (typically $200-250) for modern MMORPG's and I would recommend getting at the very least a x850xt platinum edition ($125-150) for your vid card You may want to pick up a newer generation video card though if you plan on playing more than just WoW/GW/EQ2.

Sometimes its not that easy...

Some mobo (motherboards) will only support certain processors.
Ram is tied to the mobo as well... sometimes you cant get the fast ram because it isnt supported by your mobo.

MMORPG, "in general" arent as CPU intensive as they are Vidcard intensive...
The game app will push the vid card hard, because the data stream between peers is low.

Anyhoo...

If makin it slowly... save up enuf to get a decent mobo + cpu + ram + powersupply

everything else you can cannibalize from your old pc... Chassie, Harddrives, DVD+rw Drive, Floppy (heh), even the vid card.

then set a limit on your vid card purchase... you can spend as much as your entire system on ONE vid card... so make that a really hard cap... get the best bang for your buck.... dont try to get the best one... it will drop in price by 50% within a year. Middle of the road is where you want to be.

If you are just wanting to make your MMORPG gamin experience the best it can be... Get the fastest Inet connection possible... the real bottleneck is the bandwidth

The good ol' blue screen of death ...heh...
If you cant boot off of your Window XP CD... Im 90% confident its bad ram...

use the beforementioned memTest86 app on those ram sticks...

Personally I wouldnt spend *any* more money on that PC... its 2001, everything you buy for it will be overly priced and ridiculously high ... especially compared to what you can get now.

If you can do what cabby did and cannibalize some old PCs from friend/relatives that would be best I figure.

Otherwise either:
1) get package deal, there are some sweet deals going on... seeing that you bought compaq once, one of these premade PCs should do you fine

2) build it yourself, get the basics... cannibalize the rest from your existing compaq

Im a cheap bastard, I have old PCs all over the place...
If you are only going to use your PC to surf, a p3-500 is more than enough.

I had the blue screen after I added some free RAM i got from a buddy. Computer would run fine for a few hours then my disk space would start decreasing dramatically and the hard drive would get super hot. Took it out and all fine....

Yup Yup....

Ram & mobo & CPU need to married just right or else you get weird behavior.

When you buy a PC from a small shop, they will typically wont sell you it right away... usually you gotta wait 24 hrs... they call this a "burn in" test...

They put all the pieces you want together and run a burn-in test program to make sure all the pieces behave nicely.

When you are adding/upgrading stuff you should always make sure they have a flexible policy to allow for returns
