Upgrading PS3 Hard Drive

I have a 40GB Playstation 3 and its practically full now so i have bought a Western Digital 250GB hard drive to replace the 40GB hard drive.

I have read the following link (http://www.cnet.com.au/how-to-upgrad...339282375.html) on how to perform the change, and i am comfortable with doing it, but i have one question that hopefully someone can help me with.

Once you have your upgrade drive, the next step is to back up the data on your current PS3 hard drive to an external storage unit. You can skip this step if you aren't attached to your music, videos, and game saves, but most of us will probably want to save all that information. The PS3 has a built-in software backup utility that can copy the PS3's hard-drive contents to an external storage device, such as a USB thumb drive or a memory stick.

Can i use a 1TB external hard drive for the above? As i dont have a USB thumb drive or memory stick?

This is all i need to know them im good to go.

Thanks for any help.

As long as the hard drive is FAT32 yes. Otherwise the PS3 won't recognise it.

Cheers pal, does the external drive need to be empty when converting it to FAT32?

Yeah it does, or at least it loses everything in the formatting process.

My external drive is about half full so i wont be able to use that one then.. Ill just buy a memory stick off amazon then. What do i need to transfer over, just save game data and installed game data?

Yup that's it!

I've got the 80GB ps3 and haven't ever had it get full, but thanking you guys for the ideas if it ever happens. I think those demo's take up a lot of room so I play them once and delete 'em. But plugging an external drive into your ps3 is a great way to watch things you get... on the downlooooooooooow.

Yeah it's an easy upgrade. ANY laptop HDD fits it. I've stuck with the 60gb mine came with, but will upgrade my next PS3 (this one is too loud and dying) to a 500gb.

I can get a 4 GB USB drive from work for 8, do you think 4GB is going to be enough room for my save game data? Probably won't transfer my game data, just reinstall the games when I go to play them?
