I posted this over at sherdog, but after reading some other threads, I noticed the typical internet thugging going on, so I hope posting it here will get a more civil response. That said...

So about 3 months ago, I signed my 7 year old up for (as he calls it), MMA, and after watching him do it, I decided to join myself. Like many people, I enjoy watching UFC and other MMA on TV and have always thought about training as such. A little background:

I am a married father of 4, and a Lt. in the fire service. I have always thought of myself as athletic, though I was decent at several sports, never really good at any one. I was a competitive bodybuilder for about 10 years (drugfree) stopping about 10 years ago. Ironically, it wasnt until I stopped competing in drug free contests did I decide to use steroids for the first time. The results were great, until I stopped. Then the fat gods showed up. With my weight balloning up to almost 265, I decided (maybe a year ago) to vow to get into better shape, not only for myself, but also my family, especially my hot as hell wife, so I would not be embarassed to take off my shirt at the pool.

Since starting MMA, I have dropped more than 30 pounds. Though much of this can be attributed to simply cleaning up my diet, I cant help but think a good portion is the MMA training. My training center does not focus on any one discipline. Each class is different, with striking, muay thai, conditioning, self-defense, and the PIT workouts. However, its the grappling classes that is the most enjoyable for me. So much so that I have decided to try my hand at a NAGA submission contest in October.

I suppose this log is more for me in that it will keep me focused on making daily (or almost daily) entries. What I hope to get out of this log is some tips or insight, or just much appreciated encouragement as an old man like me starts something that I wish I did 20 years ago.

My goals are simple. 1. Win (I'm not doing this to lose). 2. Learn something new (I am just scratching the MMA, especially jiu jitsu, surface). 3. Have fun (the training sucks, especially the pit, but I feel so much better afterwards). 4. Get in better shape. 5. Enjoy a better way of life through MMA. I will post more later, including my training schedule, but please critique all you like. I am, like most on here, learning as I go, and am very much looking forward to this.

Keep at it and good luck! BTW how do you enjoy the pit workout? Is it the three disc set?

No, the owner of my MMA facility spent some time out in Cali with the guy that created the pit, so he has the info. Plus I like it that way as it is always unique.

As for the workouts, they suck hard. But in the obvious good way. First time I did it, my ass hurt for a week.

Thank you all for the encouragement. So after trying to plan out my schedule for the next 2 months, it seems like 4 training sessions per week at my gym is feasible. Being a firefighter, I have the luxury of working about 9 days a month. However, since my work schedule is etched in stone, some training days will vary. Plus, I intend to workout at the station on each shift, mostly weight training, with some cardio thrown in. Tuesdays and Thursdays will be grappling days. Yuri Viilefort will be teaching these classes, which starts this Thursday. The owner of my gym recently hooked this up and I honestly had no idea who this was until I googled him. However, I am very excited that my gym will now have 2 training sessions solely for grappling. I will also do 1 pit class (which I hate) per week and 1 generally MMA class per week. At my gym, these are hybrid MMA classes (which I love). I will also be doing an early morning (or as early as possible) self-training session of either running or some pit variation that I can do myself.

I really dont plan on anything extravagant for dieting. I am only 4-5 pounds away from the heavyweight limit (224) and as much as I would like to be 199 (cruiserweight), I think thats too much in 9 weeks. So I am going to shoot for a weigh in of 215-220.

Thanks for the inspiration part. Hopefully this will encourage others. As far as the roids go, yup, it was LOL. looking back, it was so 1/2 ass done. Lesson learned.

Did some early cardio today. 10 min treadmill, 3.5 mph 10-15% grade, 10 min elliptical, and finished with a 1/2 mile run at a 10:30 pace. Running has never been my strong suit, but trying to improve (would LOVE to do a 5K someday). Will post again after class tonight.

Glad to see your dedicated on the cardio part, i know a lot of guys who went on to compete, completely forgetting skipping that part of the trainin. Good luck and keep us posted.

Oh man, I know (and thanks!). Last week was the first time I rolled for a 6 min round. holy shit, I thought I was gonna die.
