So I thought that making one of these threads mine be decent additional motivation for me to get to working out. So I made one. Complex, I know.

Right now, my knees blown out. Great time to start the thread eh? I'm currently hitting the gym, mainly only doing lifting for he time being on a fairly inconsistent basis. The main reason I'm doing this is cause doing push ups and stuff isn't the easiest being heavy, so hitting the gym allows me to gain the strength I'll need for martial arts training. I'm also horrible at lifting.

I'm gonna try and hit the cross-trainer one of the days at the gym, or maybe the bike, and basically test the waters of how my knee is doing with them. Hopefully I'll be able to get back to training in the next 3 weeks or so.

The last addition to my spectacular OP is that I'm trying to eat slightly healthier. I'm not going to convince myself I'll stop drinking and stop eating all bad food, but I'm substituting pizza for home made stuff like steak, pork chops, chicken etc. I'll also try and drink wine (Buckfast for the fellow Scots) instead of beer.

The knee means I haven't been able to do deadlift and squats in ages so fuk knows that I'm at yet.

Mate you outweigh me by more than 50 lbs and I can out bench you... bad form...
To be fair, I've only benched like 5 times in my entire life. My best mates 150lbs and benches double what I do. I'm not too concerned. As long as it's improving I don't really give a fuk. Bet I kick higher lmao :D

I started doing karate like 3 years ago as my first ever martial art. No weights, no push ups.

Then I started doing a more traditional martial art like 2 years ago (out with leg injury atm). We usually fire out around 50 push ups at the end of class, but I'm way off count and hit at most 30, depending on the sparring. It's really the first I've ever been doing push ups before.

With weights, I've literally hit the gym 5 times in my life. Only just started since my mate became a personal trainer and has talked me into it.

Weight is an issue when I've never trained before. Not in speed, cardio or anything (at least in what I'm training) and I'm probably the hardest kicker of any of the martial arts I've done, senseis aside, but in stuff like push ups and pull ups I've always struggled, and since I can't do 1 pull up, I'm like "Well if I can't train that way, weight training will be the build up". On the lat pull down, I'm able to do any amount really of a guy who'd be 11 stone, but I'm like double off lifting my own weight.

Goal for this year will be to cut down to at least 14 stone (in fighting I'd be around 12-13 I imagine) and really improve my weight strength.

Where I think weight training will come in best is in cardio. When you're tired, if you don't have the muscle, you can't summon energy from it. People doing the bench press can summon strength from their feet if they've trained enough.

I'm not eating "great". I'm trying to eat breakfast now, and I'm replacing shit like pizza with shit like steak, chicken, pork chops ect.

I've done no training this week really. I'm hoping that next week I'll be in the gym at least 4 times, with 3 weight days and one cardio day.

I haven't had any soda or fried food since 1st week of January.
I don't eat fast food anymore except for the occasional grilled chicken or turkey sandwich.
I don't eat any candy, I will eat some reduced fat Pringles sometimes but other then that no chips.
I gave up bacon :( I tried turkey bacon but that taste like shit so I just gave up bacon in all forms.
Switched to turkey sausage, which taste just fine to me. I don't eat any of the sugary cereal, switched to skim milk.
I significantly reduced the amount of bread I eat, I use to eat some kind of bread with just about every meal.
Reduced my overall calorie consumption and portion sizes.

Been doing this for over 6 months now. My sleep apnea is gone. I now sleep like a baby :thumb02:

I'm actually probably needing to eat a little more to get my metabolism in check, but yeah that's kind of what I'm trying. I'm not going to go "SALAD FROM NOW ON!" but if I get it in decent check, and then work out, I should cut weight. I'm not looking for a 6 pack or any of that shit. I'm more trying to do it to increase my potential cardio for martial arts. Plus...Im in the same weight class as Brock Lesnar :(

I shouldn't be too bad. While I eat shit, I'm no where near the fattest guy around. I'm sure at times I'd pass off as not even having much fat. But I know myself what condition I should be in if I ever want to enter competitive martial arts.

I plan on returning to Scotland next year and signing up for something competitive. Kickboxing, boxing, BJJ or MMA is pretty much it. I at least want to walk into the gym and not be sweating by the time I make it through the front door.

Competing in any kind of sport is in the past for me. What I have been doing is going for hikes. I love the scenery and it's a good way to get off my ass. Before it got so damn hot I was going about 3 times a week but now I'm lucky if I can make it out there 1 time a week since the only time I can go out there is on Saturday or Sunday morning before it gets too hot. Compared to the tough guys(and gals) here I'm on the extreme low end when it comes to the "work outs" lol

But I'm heading in a better, healthier direction. Let's see how far I can take this.

I think you should focus on cardio more. One day a week just isn't enough. You're already a big guy So if you lose some of the body fat. The muscle would still be there... obviously in order to keep that you have to do a little bit of weights training.
Just do more cardio. At least everyday:D

And we've been talking about push ups because I'm great at em:D

my maximum pull ups ever was 12 ( while cheating at the end )

1 day a week for hiking, that is not my entire workout, even if my "workout" is tiny lol

I have lost a ton of weight already, not quite comfortably revealing just how much but it's a nice number.

During my heaviest I was using a stationary bike since it's easier on the joints and it was still really cold out when I started all this. Started it with baby steps 20-30 minutes every other day or so. Then I would get up to 45 min to an hour. Then I started upping the tempo and throwing in some "sprints".

I should take the logical step to jogging or light running soon. Hopefully I make that happen soon enough. For now I just have the occasional hikes and the bike.

I make sure that even on the lazy weeks I do some kind of cardio atleast 3 days a week, I usually do some kind of cardio 5 days a week. But I do need to step up the intensity.

I can't do too much cardio yet because of my knee. But yeah I agree. If I can get back to martial arts 4 times a week, and then maybe do cardio in the gym twice, I think that would be best for me.

I'm one of the guys who can't do shit at home though. I need someone to say "You coming to the gym?" or a class or something to force me to do it. My best mate has done like no cardio ever. He's like 5'10, 11 stone, and believes that if he does cardio all that hard (completely ineffective) "bulking" he's being doing will be for nothing.

For me right now it's just about moving in the right direction. I went from sitting on my ass all day at work then sitting on my ass all day at home, only sleeping 3-4 hrs a night and stuffing my face non stop with anything and everything I wanted.
I just started 1 step at a time. Eliminated soda and fast food. Started getting more active, even if it was something small. Then I started documenting my foods and intake so I could see exactly what I was consuming each day, seeing the numbers helped me control it a lot more.
I try and set small marks so I can get the satisfaction of reaching them and making new ones.
I was at the point where I was close to just giving up. Thought I reached a point of no return. But I got a health scare early in the year and since then I have been able to work forward. I had serious doubts that I would even reach the point I'm at now. Hopefully I can keep fueling that fire and reach a point I can be proud of.

That's not true . My body is exactly the same. 5"10 ,around 150 pounds.
And I run pretty much everyday.
Still I managed to gain 5 pounds of muscle in the last 2-3 months.
Key is eating. Creating a good calorie surplus .
By 2-3 years I would like to get to 175-180 pounds. And hopefully turn pro. But thats not what you guys should do.

Trust me focus on cardio. It's the only thing that matters for now.

Also Clyde do you have an update on your knees?

#33 ·
Metabolism comes into it too. He just never gains weight. No reason to eliminate cardio for bulking anyways.

And its..."okay". Once in every step, my knee has a weird "tweak". I'm hoping that in a week or two, I'll be able to return and keep it very slow. I'm taking high kicks out of my sparring now. There's no reason for them. I like to use them cause I have the flexibility and timing for them, but my knee went cause one got caught and it's really just a risk for nothing.

Well I've been doing push ups since I was 15 . I only started pull ups this year.

And what I do with the pull ups is do maximum reps. Rest , maximum reps. Etc....

I would imagine a guy who does 35 pull ups. Would do hundreds and hundreds of push ups.

Also as I said. I know I'm lacking in muscle. And as I said by the time Im 20-21 I'd like to be 175-180 pounds.

The 1000 pull ups were a joke.

Also I eat at least 3000 calories. It was hard at first but it's easy now ..

And Seriously push ups are easy. For me it's much easier than pull ups.

It's probably because when I first started all we did was squats push ups and run.

But this year I started eating well . And doing workouts smarter. I started doing pull ups and followed a weight training routine .

I guess you're right about most people not being able to do plenty of push ups . Most people at my school can't do more than 15 push ups. But most of those guys are either too skinny or too fat. And most of them can't do a single pull up.

Hit the gym today.

Pushed my bench up by 5kg. Only really did a bit of benching and some tricep work.

Then I hit the bike. Maaaan I suck on a bike. I was mainly testing out my knee on it, but I barely made it 15 minutes without thinking I'd tie. Also, that damn seat. I honestly feel violated by it. I picked up a leaflet to a support group after my experience.

I'll be hitting the cross trainer for sure.

Food was Chicken Noodle soup for breakfast, few ham sandwiches (with white bred for you nazis) and pasta/bolognese for dinner. Hit Ribena hard too, like a boss!

Man, this knee is doing my head in. I've been shadow boxing every second of every day. I've been watching Fight Quest every day. I've been studying martial arts (learned a lot about Shuai Jiao, now learning about Baguazhang).

Every day I'm thinking about martial arts, but every single time I try and put a pivot to my elbow or punch, I feel like my knee is caught in a bubble. You know when your big toe feels like it's got some fluid in it or something, so you grab it and jerk it to the side so that it clicks? That's what my knee feels like. I want to be able to pull it to the side, click it, then it'll be fine.

I planned on going back this week but if one in every 15 punches has me creasing a little but, what will happen when I have some training adrenaline in me? My right leg is completely written off because it's my left knee, so throwing a right kick is out of question.

Any suggestions on anything I can do at home that will give me the "martial arts satisfaction"? I was thinking I could take the bag out, hit it without pivoting and standing in place, and maybe throw barely contacting kicks with my left leg (only problem there is landing heavy on it if I'm tired).
