Mon 5-02: AM BJJ was drilling top game techniques on a passive partner, then a guard pass to submission which we drilled on stability balls first. You jump up so their knees are up to their head, control the near arm, keep your head tight to theirs, jump to one knee on their belly and one on their face to a smash armbar with gable grip, then we rolled live, then I ran 2 miles as a warmdown. I found out how much easier an Americana is once you've passed guard first, LMAO.
Tue: kata. They work balance, but otherwise lame.
Wed: rested
Thur: PM BJJ. We warmed up with triangle and armbar drills, then worked kimura to kimura sweep to guillotine, then some mount escapes and a few live rounds.
Fri: 3 mile run
Sat: Judo started with a faster warmup with more rolls and breakfalls, which is fine with me. We did a few uchikomi rotations, then I learned yama arashi. That was even more wondrous than getting to work with my girl uke.

Sun 5-08: rested
Mon: 4 mile run plus a total of about 2.5 miles worth of dog walk. Whenever I run at a 9:15 mile for more half a mile or so, I get such a stomachache afterward. It passes as I get faster and stronger, but it sucks.
Tue: 4.5 mile run outside. I'm not a habitual outside runner, but running outside always makes me stronger.
Wed: BJJ was a whole lot of different stuff, with more live rolling than usual because it was a bigger class. I got a new sweep where after you break guard, you keep your opponent at arms' length, then jump into deep half, grab their ankle, post your opposite leg out and sweep (I don't know the name for it), then 20 min stepmill. Kind of sore from last night, but not as much as I though I would be.
thur: 1.5 mile run warmup, then rolls, then kimura to guillotine to triangle flow drills, then live rolling. I still cannot pass anyone's butterfly guard with the up and over pass, but I did nearly get an inverted triangle by using the S mount that I'm incorporating more and more. One of my regular partners is a Vermont state champ wrestler who is very generous in sharing what he knows, and I learn a lot whenever I roll with him.
Fri: rested
Sat: Judo, too much talking and not enough randori. I understand that this is the pace it is often taught at, but I wish we had far more of the demanding classes and far less of the chalk talk-dominated ones.

Sun 5-15:rested
Mon: BJJ, then 3.5 mile run. People are crashing around so I'll update this in more detail later. We worked leg seatbelt sweep from seated guard, a lot of live rounds, and posturing and guard passes, because a lot of us are relative newcomers.
Tue: 4 mile run.
Wed: BJJ was some flow drills, then I ran 3.5 miles. I went to karate later in the evening hoping for some basic strike/block/kick drills, and it delivered.
Thur: Judo was drilling yama arashi and eri seioi nage. I was a little off tonight, but still had a great workout, especially when we started the drills with light kumikata. I loves me some kumikata.
Fri: 3 mile run. My primary goal is distance, but I'd like to be able to run at least a few 9-minute miles in succession, as well. There wasn't gi grappling because the instructor and a bunch of the guys went to Erie (PA, about 45 min west of here) to weigh in for a grappling tournament tomorrow. I've been meaning to mention that I have cut back my drinking drastically in recent months, and it has benefited me in multiple areas. If it wasn't so beneficial, I'd have a harder time maintaining my resolve. It's tough as it is.
Sat: rested. My legs were pretty sore this AM from a week wherein I've done the most running in months. Now that it's evening, they're a lot better.

Mon 5-23: 4 mile run. I thought about the 6 PM kickboxing, but I've been improving steadily running and I just wanted to get my cardio out of the way at that point, because I've been feeling down even though I've started a new job substitute teaching.
Tue: rested, because my legs, particularly my hamstrings, hurt a lot, and I wanted to get a good run in tomorrow.
Wed: 5 mile run.
Thur: I subbed for an elementary school gym teacher, so I essentially warmed up all day. Judo was a little uchikomi, then 2 uchikomi and a throw, then moving drills that went into butsugari gaiko and then neutral randori into newaza. Then I took my gi off, put my slidy shorts on and walked across the mat to nogi BJJ. We put the 6 oz gloves on and included some light striking with the grappling. I had a super fun exchange wherein I realized I can only defend a heelhook or ankle lock by rolling out of it, then the guy rolled, then I rolled, and we were laughing after about 6-7 rolls. Don't let anybody tell you there's no laughing in jiu-jitsu!

I don't normally post outside my week-by-week format unless I'm replying to another member, but I'm kind of frustrated atm. My BJJ instructor has just left my gym for another space. It's not far, and he is giving lower rates to people who are coming from my gym, but this is his 3rd space in 2 years, and it pisses me off that I have to keep moving around to continue my BJJ training.

This instructor's previous gym folded primarily because of low student numbers and instructors frequently not showing up to run class. I guess it could be argued that he's strip-mined the gym I'm currently at for members, but that gym attracts scores of little karate kids, so I don't think they're hurting. There was some sort of announcement to that end during Monday PM classes, but I wasn't there, as I'd been there running in the AM.

The space Jay has moved to is the only place that I can train gi grappling. For some reason, the people who train nogi at my current gym are very resistant to buying a BJJ gi. They're not all pricey, and I keep hearing that "the last Monday of every month is going to be gi" and it never is; like that was anywhere near enough to begin with.

I would like to go to a grappling tournament on June 11. I may end up having to go to my older daughter's best friend's graduation party, but the point is that I'd like to grapple competitively soon, and I need to train accordingly.

Sun 5-29: 4 mile run. I just got three furiously angry texts from my BFFF after I didn't go to her bonfire. I never committed to going in the first place. I hardly slept last night, there were huge thunderstorms this evening, and I'm sick to death of gatherings preceded by the almost-inevitable"we'll make Smores" No thanks. Something must be wrong with me, because I don't like them at all. That, or I think it's a code for "We don't want to cook or get any beer." The good mood I got from that run has evaporated completely.
Mon 5-30 rested
Tue: 5-31 PM single and double leg takedown drills, then king of the hill. (kind of like shark tank, I think).
Wed: Rested and felt full of fail. Shooting in drills make my legs hurt so much the next day.
Thur: I am never being late to judo again. 3 of us were 10 min late and my sensei canceled practice. He took us out for beers, but I still feel like it's a huge fail on our part. I guarantee I was the only one late due to chasing kids around, though.
Fri: rested. I'm never doing a class that is all takedown drills again, not until I've done a lot more that are partly takedown drills, anyway.
Sat: 2 mile dog walk. I walk my dog twice a day every day, but we went farther today because he loves it (He is bred to pull and run) and because the rest of this week was so lame workout-wise.
Sun: Same as Saturday.

Mon 6-06: 3.5 mile run, about 2.5 mile total dog walk.
Tue: 1 mile warmup run, then a bunch of takedown drills. I'm hoping that my recovery time will be much less than what it was last week. I don't get why takedown drills have been 90% of the class lately. I'm not good at them and I don't like them.
Wed, Thur: rested. Legs hurt quite a bit, but not as badly as the last time I did a lot of shooting in drills.
Fri: Ran 1.5 miles in intervals (I was teaching HS gym) then pitched many innings playing softball.
Sat: just dog walks
Sun: Same, but further, I guess about 2.5 miles overall.

Mon 6-13: Pitched in softball, then 2 mile run on the treadmill in the HS weight room, then 4 bag drills, then about 2.5 miles total dog walks.
Tue: BJJ was guard passes, double armbar from high guard, sweep from high guard to single armbar, and clock choke, then a few live rounds. I seem to have developed some semblance of top game, guard game and scramble against a small man, which thrills me more than I can express. I got caught in an americana, though, which was embarrassing. Then drove home because I didn't have my iPod, drove to my other gym which is very near my house, and ran 3.5 miles. Then I walked the dog about 1.5 miles. I think apart from driving, I was in perpetual motion for 3 hours or so, which is fantastic.
Wed: walked my dog about 2.5 miles, went to karate in the PM, it was all kick drills. Lame content, great workout. I had one of my favorite partners, so I was excited.
Thur: AM 4 mile run. Judo at 6. I took aspirin lol. I'm supposed to belt test again in about 2 months and I want to be great. It ended up being a small class and afterward I drilled eri seioi nage, harae goshi, tae otoshi, hiza guruma and yama arashi with my uke, which was fun as shit.
Fri: rested
Sat: I had two girl ukes in judo. This has never happened before, and I was totally excited. We repeated the tae otoshi heavy class from Thursday. It feels so weird throwing a woman when I've trained with men for so long. We're all light and such!
Sun: 30 min stepmill

Mon 6-20: 5 mile run. I'm hopeful that I'll be able to run a 10K this fall, if nobody has a soccer game or little pal's bday party that they just have to attend.
Tue: 4 mile run. I had to stop and stretch my calves out a few times. They don't always stay limber. I try not to run in the late afternoon because the gym isn't air conditioned, and I didn't have a ponytailer, only an annoying clip.
Wed: 4 mile run, 20 min stepmill. My TKD sabunim is now teaching a boxing class at another local space. I haven't been able t get to it in a couple of weeks, but I'm so looking forward to training with him again. He is the best standup coach I've ever had, bar none.
Thur: Judo was a lot of throwing the line and butsugari gaiko. It's about time we had a class with minimal uchikomi and proper cardio.

Mon 6-27: 5 mile run, then felt like hurling the rest of the day. I see improvement with every run, so it's worth the stomachache.
Tue: 45 min stepmill
Wed: 5 mile run. I don't seem to have such a stomachache this time. I haven't been to a karate class in about a week. Go ahead and judge, but I like taking classes with a lot of women, and there's the whole speed-balance-agility skillz thing. I did end up taking karate that night, and it was fun.
Thur: 3 mile run in the AM. Judo was mostly drilling harae goshi. I've altered my grip so the float is a little easier. I had one of my girl partners. She is the tough little sister of one of the orange belts, and has a good ground game from wrestling with her brother. I tried to pin her in kesa gatame and she was trying to reverse it. It made my day.
