Jorge was back today after having his baby! Started off with a warmup that turned into an extended ginastica natural thing. Then it went full Rickson style and we practed breathing techniques and that signature stomach roll thing. Then we rolled. Couldn't pass a blue's guard and got guillotined. Beat up a big green belt and got an arm triangle and armbar. Think I want to try no gi tomorrow.

Went in thinking it would be a nice fun no gi session. Turned out to be wrestling class. What is it with gyms doing sneaky wrestling classes on wednesdays...did warm up drills and then some stance, hand fighting stuff, entry and finish on a basic double leg. Drilled it then shadowed it with sprawls. Looks like not much has changed and I still can't wrestle!

Finally it was no gi. I was excited because I haven't done no gi in awhile but figured I'd do well. I got paired with all the badasses though. First two rolls were against skilled (and one was freakishly strong) purple belts. Got smashed and tapped to a variety of things that I can't remember. Third roll was a stalemate.

Advanced Gi

Technique was a sweep from de la riva. Then we drilled from de la riva. Did alright and hit a few sweeps. Rolled and did better having a good back and forth with a blue and getting the edge on a brown belt. Jorge pulled me aside and asked me my name and if I wanted to train hard. At first I thought I was getting in trouble for rolling too hard (which I don't think I do at all). Turns out he just invited me to come to competition class tues&thurs at 1pm. I'm flattered but we'll see!

Beginner Gi

Basic standing guard break + knee slide pass. Drilled guard passes using that technique only, then regular guard passes, actually pulled off something resembling the de la riva sweep from yesterday on a white belt, which is a miracle. Then regular rolling. Did well against a blue but couldn't finish with an arm triangle, abandoned it and got an armbar from back shortly after. Another blue belt had good defense and I only inched passed his guard near the end to squeeze past a stalemate.

Warmup, guard pass drill - didn't really like the drill because it went from toreando pass straight to knee on belly which feels sloppy to me without maintaining pressure and establishing side control. Also didn't appreciate enjoy being corrected about my perfectly fine sleeve grip from my blue belt partner. Oh well.

Drilled escapes from side control and back then Jorge arrived and helped us work on basic back escapes. I had most of his points down already but a few changes he makes is that he walks his legs to the side after scooting his but down, and he uses an arm to take the first hook off.

Rolled one round with the big purple belt that beat Kajan at a grappling thing last year. We went pretty chill and thanks to a timely post off my head I eventually managed to pass his guard right at the end of the round.

Note to self to stop going into gi class with stubble and leaving looking like a **** victim.

Thiago Goncalves is on TUF Brazil 2. He used to teach a bunch of our classes back in B.C. and I got to spar with him a few times. I know who to root for!

Oh, got a scale that measures bodyfat and stuff. I don't claim these things to be very accurate but I always enjoyed my roommates and got myself a quality one for the hell of it. I noticed it has two very different readings for me depending on if I do normal or athletic build. I'm going to toot my own horn and go by the athletic one.

201.8 lbs
8.3% bodyfat
7.4lbs bone
65.5% water
48.7% muscle
