Lift day

Squat 3,3,3,3,3,3 @ 225lbs
DB Bench Press 3,3,3,3,3,3 @ 70lbs
Deadlift 3,3,3,3,3,3 @ 225lbs
Clean and Press 3,3,3,3,3,3 @ 95lbs

Turns out the gym closes early on saturday and is closed sunday so I had to do this lift day today. There's a new gym opening up in Jan that I will probably be switching over to.

Weights up slightly. This is a longer day to complete than I originally planned. I wanted to stop after the deadlifts but pushed through and powered through the clean and press. The nice thing about 3 rep sets is you can always will your way through one more set. My forearm felt fine through the benching, so it definitely got better. The real test will be on the heavybag though.

Bodyweight is slightly down at 211lbs. BJJ tonight.

BJJ

Warmed up with some grappling hockey. Drilled guard passes, scissor sweeps/bridge and rolls, and a arm bar from knee on belly/an escape, and finally hook and sickles. Then did guard passes. I did pretty well here, me and my partner were watching Saulo yesterday and today we were sweeping eachother easily. Advanced was just open mats, I got to go against a brown belt, we were rolling without submissions and though he was obviously taking it light I was pretty good with staying relaxed and finding my way out of his predicaments. I even caught him off balance a couple times, though when I tried the sweep he found a way around. Rolled a couple people pretty well.

Later I had to sit aside a few rounds because my left quadricep started to spasm and freeze up so I sat aside to stretch and cool down. It feels fine now, it's just from all the lifting it was doing earlier.

There was a big promotion day today and there's now a large amount of blue belts in our class, and my partner finally got his first stripe. This is good because now there's a few blues that I can be competitive with. Hopefully, with some extra effort in no-gi, the conditioning outside of class, and the bjj books/dvds I can strike some fear in these guys.

My lower back hurts a bit from rolling. Probably won't be doing the gym again tomorrow morning....our MMA gym is closed quite a bit for the holidays so I'll get some extra conditioning in.

MMA...

Last class before a short break for Xmas. Closed the rest of the week, then open monday and tuesday, then closed again for a few days until it reopens on the 5th. Kind of a bummer.

Class today started with pummelling, then a few techniques to take down from pummelling. Also did single leg take downs, and a new choke from side control. I think he called it a Dars/Darce choke or a Bravo choke. It was tricky but I kind of got the hang of it.

Rolling today I was pretty mediocre. Dominated a few positionally, got dominated a few positionally. I got caught in a kimura once and didn't submit anyone, though I almost caught an armbar.

My backs still sore and my elbows have some deep soreness already too, so I guess a little bit of rest won't hurt.

They're open today and tomorrow before closing again for new years. If I could train through the holidays I probably would. Rest is good too though. I caught a cold like 2 days ago and considered not going today, I downed some cough syrup and went anyways, only real difference seemed to be that I couldn't breath through my nose.

BJJ

A thorough warmup, drilled 3 guard passes from a stand, then some pummelling. Then onto guard passes. I did pretty mediocre but not horrible either. I got to go with a blue belt who I would nearly get around on then he'd find a point with no balance and toss me over.

Advanced was just straight rolling from the knees with a min or two between preople. I don't know how many rounds I did maybe 6-8? I did much better in advanced. In all I got an armbar from mount, an armbar from mount with the triangle set up (which I ****ed up on but still finished), a kimura from side control, and an arm triangle choke. All of these I don't land much so that was nice. I was submitted with an armbar, an americana, a choke where they basically grab your collar and dig their forearm into your throat, and I also had an embarassing tap at the end of a tough roll because I was tired as **** and he was smothering my face. All in all lots of good rolls, I got to go with another 2 blue belts, both were slow paced, calculated rolls. The one had every answer for my moves and got me with that forearm choke...I should have fought it, but meh. The other one is one of the few guys significantly heavier than me, I got in his half guard and stayed trapped the for most of the round. Almost took his back but didn't. Took mount but the round ended.

I found I was in both ends of half guard an abnormal amount today. Alot of the time I had no answer for it, so I'll watch Saulo's session on it again tomorrow.

I got my second stripe today. My instructor noted that he's noticed some jiu jitsu in my wrestling.

MMA

Some pumelling practice, some clinch practice, some double leg take down practice. I seem to actually be capable of performing a takedown now.

Had a few rolls and did well. Something seems to have clicked and I can find armbars much easier. I had one roll where I put a triangle on him, he stacked and tipped me over, transition to armbar, he rolled me with him then I put the triangle back on and finished it. Snazzy. Definitely feel like I'm getting better and find myself less and less in positions without at least 2 ideas of what I can do.

Gym's closed again until next monday. I'll evaluate myself tomorrow and then see about hitting the weights tomorrow. I gotta call and make sure they're actually open too though.

My diet slacked over the holidays and I also got fully drunk once, but that's past and I feel healthy, and confident about the improvements I've been making. I haven't done any standup in like a month now and it's starting to itch at me.

Just wondering what problem you have with takedowns, if you type up your technique maybe people can help with pointers. When I first started wrestling I really had trouble getting my chest right above my knee. If you feel like it, let us know and we can try and give some pointers.

I'm tall and lanky so I need to drop pretty far to shoot, making it slow and telegraphed. I'm also so low on shorter opponents (most opponents) so when I level change my balance feels weak. Furthermore my stance is southpaw which against orthodox gives us a greater distance apart from eachother.

Barbell Complex (55lbs X 6 Sets X 6 Reps X 60 Seconds Rest)
Good Morning
Overhead Squat
Stiff Legged Deadlift
Bent Over Row
Reverse Grip Curl
Military Press
Skullcrusher

6,6,6,6,6,6 Same weight, finished all reps. I'm not going to think about how shitty it's going to be adding a few lbs to that next week.

Ab Circuit (2 Sets X 120 Second rest)
Weighted Twisting Crunch 20,20 @ 50lbs
Reverse Crunch 15,15 @ bodyweight
Cable Crunch 20,20 @ 150lbs
Ab Plank 1:00, 1:00

More slight improvements. Man this day makes me feel hardcore. Bodyweight is 212lbs. Gotta crank my diet up a bit I think I'm coming up short on calories.
