Clean and Jerk 3,3,3 @ 115lbs

Burpee Circuits 3 rounds of 1:30. 1:00 Rest inbetween.

I've felt a little shitty over the past 2 or 3 days. I've got a cold that's set in and keeping me clogged up, I feel tired, weak, and unmotivated. Today at the gym I added 10lbs to the Clean and Jerk. I'm beginning to think that the olympic lifts should be dropped. I feel like they're a bit dangerous without a knowledgable eye to tell me where my form can be improved on. The burpees were especially draining, but I managed to add a 3rd round. Going to increase the round length next week.

BJJ

Warmup drilling, armbar drill, collar choke combo drill. Technique was advancing from a basic side control to getting your knee under their shoulder for better control, then knee on belly for points, and finally mount. In guard passes I didn't do any passing but didn't get passed either. I did however get kimurad. I was feeling really tired at this point.

For advanced Dave decided to shark tank the people with competitions/fights coming up, which means I was one of them. They were 2 minute rounds before the next guy switches in, and starting in my guard. This was a good thing because the guard is probably my strongest point. First guy was a blue belt who for some reason didn't want to start in my guard, I rushed him into his half guard, got on the side and into an arm triangle. Snuck out of half guard, then started pivoting and tightening. Time ran out before I could tap him, but it was nice because I could rest up here. Next guy stayed in my guard most of the time and I caught him in a triangle and could hear him gargling but I couldn't finish. Oh well. Next two guys were smaller so I decided to chill and preserve my energy a bit, kept them in guard/body triangles for most of the roll. Next guy was the huge bastard and he had me stacked but couldn't pass before running out of time. Final guy gave me a hell of an elbow grinding into my thighs, ended up standing to break guard, but couldn't get past my legs to pass. I survived and never really got threatened. Woot.

Then a few more people got shark tanked and I got to participate in that a bit but most of us were just sitting around watching for awhile.

Finally by the time that was done we had a couple rounds left. I went with a dude and managed to catch him in an armbar from guard. Then when we restarted I took his back and RNCed. Next guy was a blue belt and we fought around in guard/half guard for a round, he ended up passing to side control by the time the bell went. Final guy I was stuck in his guard/half guard for most of the round and couldn't get past, he was a newer guy but he's learning fast.

End of class. Dave said he'll start rolling a few rounds of no-gi with me at end of class on monday. Should be a real good chance to get some legit insight (and ass kicking) from a black belt.

I was feeling shitty today but my moods changed a bit after having a really good class.

Tomorrow I'm not training in the morning but will probably go for a stretch/sauna. I'm going in an hour early to meet up with a dude to do some sparring and rolling before class.

Went in an hour early to meet up with some guys for stand up sparring. Did 4 rounds. I did alright. Still getting tired, and need to throw more combos. Tomorrow I'm going to focus on my breathing. I lost a contact again. I'm going to have to get daily disposables to use when I spar.

MMA class. Warmup run..then we did some tumbling including attempting walking handstands and failing. Technique was starting with someone in your half guard, using forearm pressure to get an underhook, reaching over to the opposite hip, pulling yourself down into the guy, face into their chest, square up your hips, outside leg comes around to stand up. We did this over and over for like half an hour. Then we drilled it. I did okay here and got to roll with Kajan where he did things I can't begin to describe besides maybe the words butterfly guard. The toughest day is tomorrow.

Traing @ Pro gym

Came in, stretched, warmed up, sparred for 4 rounds. They said I did much better and was more aggressive. I'd probably agree. I also took more damage though. Halfway into the first round I leaned out of a headkick but the foot caught me clean on the nose and the blood started to flow. Finished the round feeling like a badass. After the sparring my left shoulder and elbow were aching at the joints. I think it was the kimura I got caught in on monday. I tried to muscle my way out of it when I should have been tapping, now things are a litte overextended and sore. Lesson learned. Paul told me to do a few rounds just kicking the bags. Done. Sat around and watched them do drills, probably looked like a wimp but ah well. I'm feeling real beat up again today, I'll see how I feel tomorrow, either a rest day or a light lifting day. Definitely a stretch/sauna day.

Muay Thai

Skip 15 mins, I've reached an almost acceptable level of skipping. Kajan set us on the bags and I got a couple rounds on the pads with him. He seems to be picking out certain combos for me. Did a few rounds pumelling for the clinch, then using full effort, and then neck ups at the end. I'm starting to see how Kajan uses stuff from the pro gym for his own classes.

MMA

Warm up run, a bunch of tumbling. Technique was standing over an opponent on the ground assuming that they'll use de la riva guard on you. All of them are based around coming in with your lead leg's knee digging into their one leg to trap it, while you control the other leg with your hand. From there you can lift the leg and kick it, get decent gnp with your free hand, or pass the ankle to the other hand and come around the side with your shin digging into their hip and their leg stretched out. Good ground and pound from the last one. We just worked those and drilled em.

I didn't do anything thursday and it was much needed. Even today I felt really drained. I tracked my diet for an average day to check up on that end of things. Getting 4000+ calories and 300g+ protein so I should be right where I need to be. So we can assume that any feelings of being drained is either lack of sleep or simply my body's at its current limit. It's nice only working 4 days a week though.

Tomorrow is endurance conditioning, and then some more rest because next week is right around the corner.

Really nice stuff. You do a really great job at balancing the skill training with endurance and strength training. How often do you train Bjj with a Gi on?

Conditioning

Stretch

Burpee Rounds 4 rounds of 2:00, 1:00 rest inbetween

Sauna

I've dropped the olympic lifts for now, so this was a light short and sweet morning. Today I added 30 seconds to the rounds and added a 4th round from last week. It was tough but I had more energy/leg fatigue from not doing any lifting beforehand so it was manageable. It sounds like mixing burpees with shadowboxing w/ sprawls might be a good idea for fight simulation. I'm going to spend a bit more time doing straight burpees and then incorporate this.

Today I feel rested and motivated. I'm still being held down by a cold from over a week ago, though I think I'm nearing the end of it. I find that if you take a bit of cold and sinus medicine and hack and snort everything out of you before your workout, once you start breathing heavy it'll stop you from clogging up again for a few hours.

I just realized that the Tiger Balms are happenning this weekend in Vancouver. I kind of forgot about them. I'm going to enter into the Submission Grappling part for sure on Saturday. I've also been eyeing up the Modified Pankration. It's essentially a watered down M.M.A. fight, I think something like this might ease the transition into my first fight. Here's the link for the rules I'm a little unclear on what they mean by "Clean controlled head kicks and punches (touch contact)" What's touch contact? Is it full power or not? Without doing much looking around for a good one here's a pankration fight from this tournament http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJi5a1jqBFM

I'm going to talk to Dave and see what he knows about this, and tomorrow I'm going to ask Kajan if he thinks this would be good for me.

BJJ tonight. Last class Dave said he's going to roll a few rounds with me in No-Gi, so I'm going to touch up on things a bit by going through Saulo's Freestyle dvds for what it's worth. I'm going to need it.

Thanks. It's a hectic schedule trying to cover everything at once, but I'm doing a decent job. I used to do Gi BJJ every monday and wednesday, but since getting scheduled for a fight in June I've been invited to spar at the pro gym on wednesdays, and I couldn't miss out on that chance. So as it is I only train Gi on mondays, and No gi on tuesday, friday and sometimes thursday and saturday.
