Breaking into M.M.A. Training Log

Hello all, I've been mostly lurking these forums for awhile now. A little introduction: I'm 20 years old, just wrapping up doing a little world travel. While I was in Thailand I got involved with a Muay Thai training camp called Tiger Muay Thai, and trained pretty hard for a month and loved it. I decided to see where this passion can take me, and have decided to aim to fight in my first M.M.A. fight at a local amateur venue in my town called Valley Fight this coming December. This means I have a lot of work to do.

I will be training at a local M.M.A. gym called Revolution Chilliwack, as well as training with my friend who also wants to fight within the year.

I'm 20 years old, Southpaw, 6'4 about 195lbs, muscular build from years of weightlifting (I've got an enormous journal on a bodybuilding website but alas, there's no point talking M.M.A. on a bodybuilding forum, so here I am) but relatively weak cardio, other weaknesses include an occassional occurence of shin splints and contact lenses. I've only trained Muay Thai for a month and that's basically all my training besides a bit of self taught boxing.

I'm wrapping up my travels now, sitting in Bangkok for a few more days. I checked out a nearby Muay Thai gym but it was a hole in the ground with some mats and wasn't cheap, so **** it. I'm doing bodyweight exercises and shadowboxing in my room to help maintain what I can.

I go home soon so training resumes on August 1st as I enroll in the MMA gym back home and in addition begin my own training with a partner to keep the total training time to about 3.5 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Training is 4 weeks on followed by 1 week rest, each week is 5 days training, alternating between 2 days set out like this:

Day 1 - Technique
Stretch
Shadowboxing
Hit Pads
Standup Sparring
Rolling
Stretch
Go to class

Day 2 - Conditioning
Stretch
Skipping
Weight Training (Divided into Push/Pull/Leg days focusing on functional strength, explosive power, and endurance.)
Heavy Bag
Speed Bag
Stretch
Go to class

Classes are as follows:
Mon - Beginner Jiu-Jitsu
Tue - M.M.A.
Wed - Beginner Jiu-Jitsu
Thur - Boxing + Muay Thai
Fri - Boxing + Muay Thai + M.M.A
Sat - Rest
Sun - Rest

Going to ease myself into it and build momentum; first week just go to the classes, second week go to the classes and do training every second day, then by the third I'm doing the full routine. Also going to start light on my weights and build momentum over the weeks as powerlifters do.

I've also wrote up a flexible diet that I believe I can maintain pretty easily. I'll add the details once I've gone through with it for awhile in case any changes need to be made. What's important is the 6000 mostly healthy calories to exceed my maintenance level for a gradual weight gain.

Supplements are Protein/Creatine Monohydrate/Multivitamin/Fish Oil, considering a pre-workout supp like N.O. Xplode but don't really need the extra hit to the wallet or a caffeine dependency, so we'll see on that one.

I picked up all my gear to train out here in Thailand for nice and cheap. Got 16oz gloves, shin guards, wraps, mouth guard, and headgear. My friend has bought all of these things as well as some Thai kicking pads and a round timer, so we're all equipped and ready to go.

I'm aiming for December for my premier amateur M.M.A. bout. Wish me luck and feel free to pass on advice. I'm gonna tear a hole into this guy. :thumb02:

Jiu jitsu class

Tech was side control scarf hold, step over, far side armbar.

Drilled from side control and I got mostly crushed.

Rolled with a tiny black belt, (Lilzinho is the name I think?) Trapped in his closed guard the whole round Prevented like 3 armars and a triangle attempt but finally got caught in one. Next was an enormous blue belt who will probably be my nemisis for this trip, he's noticeably bigger and better than me but close enough that I get paired with him everday. Pretty much a stalemate but thats because i was playing safe and not pressing the action.

Jiu jitsu class

Still sloppy but at least had my moments today.

Technique was a darce choke starting from side conntrol and moving to north south.

Most of the class was positional sparring from side control. Got mostly slaughtered but did some nice reguards on a brown.

Rolled with my massive blue belt brazilian nemesis, back and forth but mostly a stalemate. I'll get him one day.

Saw Lil Nog when I was eating dinner today!

Missed yesterday to rest and let my sunburn be at peace. We'll do 5x training this week and build up.

Weighed an even 100 kilos with my gi on today. Technique was side control escapes, basically just brace, lift at elbows, reguard, or lift at elbows , swim nearest underhook while comng up to knees then reaching behind thigh to roll him over. Rolled with blue belt nemesis who was hurt so we just flowed. rolled with black belt who tried to rag doll me but spent most of his time tied up in closed guard or half, got tapped to a kneebar though.'' **** YOU! YOU'RE STRONG'' he says after. Had a good roll in a brown's guard but eventually got armbarred. Felt good today, the initial hurdle is getting cleared.

Tech was mmmount americana, they reach to defend with other arm which you step over for armbar or a modified bow and arrow choke. Not bad.

Drilled positionally from mountt, got raped by a purple belt from canada and a black belt. Rolled a purple, a brown, and a black. Got dominated. Keep banging my head on this wall and somethings bound to give eventually.

Started tracking my calories with a slight deficit...about 2500 + whatever I burn in training. Also starting to eat at home more to save money. No goal weight, just want to lean out gradually. Been doing it 3 days, weight today was 98.4 kilos with a dry gi on.

Tech was mount, cross collar grip, knee moves around to head, pressure driving nearest arm over their body for armbar. Rolled the swearing black belt first who prefaced the session by telling me he's the ''dick of the galaxy''. Flopped guard, got passed, I think he got to north south and submitted me, but I may have scambled out of it. Forget. Similar thing happenned but he went to knee on belly but I reversed out and ended the round in a scramble. Purple belt swept me a couple times with butterfly/hlaf guard, I watched video on some passes but I need to review, got armarred at least once, but at least got a reversal fro north south and had a brief glimpse of side control. Blue belt fought from my guard got passed to half then fought his double unders, he got to side, I reversed, took knee on belly, took mount, caught an arm triangle for my fist submission of the trip. Aww ya.

Will attempt to do no' gi tmrw morning for a double training; there was a holiday on monday and the gym was closed. Neat to start adjusting to doubles now anywyas.

Didn't get much sleep and roommate rudley awoke me, ditched morning class.

Tech today was a sleeve choke from back, kind of like an ezekiel. I liked it and will try to work it. The other option was transition to mounted arm triangle.

Drilled from back control, did alright with a purple and a small blue. Rolled the dick of the galaxy black belt, did good survival minus getting armbarred in a scramble. Rolled a purple who usually sweeps me with butterfly or half guard, managed to get past and make it to mount to win a round. A sort burst of technique video on a weakness right before class is paying dividends.

Tech was a sweep from closed guard wwhen they stand. Grab opposite side sleeve, when they stand underhook wthe nearest leg with your free arm, pass the trapped sleeve over to the underhooked arm, extend hips and ride sweep to mmount maintaining grip.

Drilled from guard passes, did decent. Rolling did well against a brrazilian blue,,, almost had an armbar from guard but was stacked against the wall and we had to move. Rolled a blue and had good back and forth but he managed to reverse me into side control and find a darce from north/south, nice work new guy from Germany. Also rolled a black belt and played mostly survival and stall from guard/half guard and mount. Got tapped once on a collar choke from mount.

It's another goddamn Brazilian ppublic holiday today so there's no class. There's a park down the street with chin up bars, dip bars, decline benches so I was experimenting with them with the hopes of putting together a full bodyweight routine together. Today was:

One Leg Squat 20,20,20
Dip 10,10,10
Pullup 5,4,4
Chinup 5,5,5
Decline Situp 20,15,10
Reverse Crunch 10,10,10
Inverted Row 10,10,10
Hyper Extension 10,10,10

Attempted my first muscle up ever. Failed. Will work on pullups/dips and check youtube for some pointers on it. I'll fine tune this routine, maybe split it between two days. I also want to try some bjj drills, I found a real nice video that I'll post later. Ideally I'd rotate bodyweight exercises/ bjj solo drills/bjj partner drills in the morning and then hit class 5-6 evenings a week.
