It is good to hear that you are feeling better! Good luck with your training. Hopefully you stay well and are able to get right back into it!

Went in early to hit the bag, didn't use a timer just did set numbers. Double jab, 1-3, 1-2, 2-3-2, left round, left push-left round, lead push-superman jab, clinch and knee.

Gringo class. Warm up with a variety of guard passes. Worked on hook and sickle sweep to knee cup pass, then an armbar. I'll go over the armbar. Once side control is locked, their nearest arm is pushed to the opposite side of the head as if they were being arm triangled. You hold do this with your nearest hand but feed it to your other arm reaching behind their head. Your nearest arm traps their far arm, tucking at the elbow as you move towards north south as if you were going for a kimura, but instead keep going, taking the armbar as you fall of towards their legs, grabbing at their nearest knee to discourage them from rolling away.

We did some drills. One starting in your partner's guard trying to posture as they're trying to break it. Then another with the same except once you establish posture you stand up. Then another starting from side control and moving around to their other side.

In rolling I got a good white belt that pulled guard and gave me a real hard time. I was patient and eventually passed and took mount as the round ended.

Then I got Gerbil but I got to start on his back. First time I made the mistake of body triangling. Ankle locked fast. Second time I held back longer but couldn't really threaten anything. I transferred to mount as he was getting closer to escape, but it was only a matter of time before he got his guard back. Spent alot of time with him sinking a kimura and me making him earn it, but he eventually got it free and tapped me again. When the round ended I was just about to get armbarred.

Rolled a blue, got swept into side control but reversed the position. He eventually got his guard back and kimrad me.

I was feeling good at the start of class but as it wore on I started to feel extremely weak and light headed. It's just the dehydration and I have to suck it up for the time being.

When I got sick I was 95 kilos and dropped to 89. Today I'm 92. My cut off for the tournament on thursday is 94.

I've decided to go to the Rickson Gracie seminar wednesday morning, then the Rio Open is thursday and/or friday for me. I saw an ad for some MMA fights here in Rio...R$15 to get in! That's amazing. That's like 9$US to see MMA fights if you were wondering. So assuming I don't get shanked and robbed I'll have an interesting rest of the week to write about.

Good class. Brazilian Class tonight.

I've been reading this journal for a long time now and I just wanted to thank you for it all I also just finished reading Gerbil's log on Sherdog and together you have painted a picture of Brazil as a free-spirited and amazing country...

I don't train MMA myself, but I love travelling the world to surf, been thinking of going to Brazil next summer if I can persuade a few friends to come along with me
Your stories have certainly made me a lot more determined to make that happen

But, back on topic... Keep up the good work, I enjoy reading your stories and commend you for this bit of work

Brazilian Class.

Warmup. Technique was a butterfly guard pass. Basically underhook the far side and tip him over.

Rolling I got a really good matchup with a blue my size. Spent most of the time in his half guard in a stalemate, I couldn't pass and he couldn't sweep. I did eventually pass but somehow got on top of me eventually and cranked a collar choke. Talked to him afterwards, hopefully I get more rolls with him.

Also got a good blue belt, spending most of the time in his guard. Finally got side control before the round ended.

I feel like I rolled someone else today but I don't remember. Weird eh?

As I was walking out there was a rock star looking guy peeking into the gym through the window and talking to someone. As I walked by I thought "Man that guy looks like Babalu from behind....wait a second...I'm in Brazil." Turn around and it's Babalu. Shook his hand. He said "Sup." Intimidating looking guy, but I noticed he seems pretty short for a LHW. Is he fighting at MW now? He must have barely been 6'0 if not, under.

Tomorrow morning I believe there is a muay thai class with Kru Toy. I've been asking him to do a class for us and finally I'm healthy enough to do it.

Awesome! Glad you liked it. Thanks for writing...sometimes it feels like I'm just talking to myself in here, which can get lonely.

Do Brazil man. Just do it. Maybe one friend is a good idea, but don't depend on a group friends to join you. People can say they're on board 6 months out but they'll flake 75% of the time.

Can't comment on the surf here, but the beach scene is pretty nice.

Well if I was to go I would love for it to be a 6 month trip like I had to NZ just over a year ago... Sadly having started my education that ain't happening... But a month of surfing, looking at women and living in a van would be awesome... Don't know if it would be safe to live in a van in Brazil though :P

Muay Thai Class

Warmup run, shadowboxing. Did a circuit of heavy bag and pad work. Maybe 8 rounds in total? Then a bit of clinch work. God I feel sloppy. Kru Toy wanted me to change my stance entirely into a full on muay thai stance and do some strange fading/circling/blocking that did not feel natural at all, but I'll work on it.

That sounds like a great month, but yeah, safety could be an issue. Best bet would be to connect with some bilingual surfers out here and see if it's feasible.

Gringo Class

Just some prep for the tournament. Some back and forth takedowns, 1 for 1 sweeps, guard posturing and standing. My training partner is in my division and unfortunately we used our schools from home, so we might get matched together. Kind of lame if it happens, but no big deal. Everyone seems real excited about the tournament here. I never did get too excited for these things, but I suppose if jiu-jitsu is your only sport then this is all you have to work towards.

Some random observations from Brazil:

-They have all kinds of talk shows that are just inane and pointless and inevitably lead to a hot Brazilian woman dancing. They also like to throw in transvestite guest hosts. I also have no idea what this was about, but saw a guy throwing frogs into a blender and making a shake, wtf? Oh, and Xena Warrior Princess, Captain Planet, and Pokemon are all in regular rotation and totally viewable in Portuguese.

-Finding a multivitamin at a grocery store is impossible, they don't carry them. One would think the pharmacy would be the place to go. I was wrong. After stumbling around trying to explain what a multivitamin, they pulled out a little container with the nutritional potency of a quarter of a centrum and charged me like 30$US for 30.

-It's totally normal to just full blown makeout with your partner anywhere and everywhere. I'm still trying to gauge what's rude and what's totally appropriate while checking a girl out in plain sight.

Up early for Rickson Gracie seminar tomorrow. I'll try to get a picture with the man.
