That's normally okay but afterwards my stomach was killing me, I figured it was the repeated punching and elbowing and that I might have some internal bruising or something. Anyways, I mustered up the strength to go to BJJ class and felt just awful. We did some more open guard pass techniques. Then I got home and sat in my bed all day feeling ******* terrible. I eventually ended up in the bathroom, blasting out the contents of my body from multiple directions. I think it's food poisoning. I haven't ate in a long time now and am just starting with liquids. Fun stuff. On top of that, the house is over packed with people right now and there's barely any breathing room. Oh and the weather in Rio has gone to shit.
hahaha, what your doing in Brazil is awesome, I hope I get a similar oppurtunity some day,(it really does seem to make economical sense since some foreign countries the dollar goes so far)... anyways I spent 6 months in Panama (like the canal country) when I was 17 and I think you can relate when I say that no pain I have ever faced in training or a fight is as bad as having diarhea when your in a south american country. personally I spent the first week of my stay fearful to crap in the toilets...then one night i woke up knowing that the enevitle was about to come..I had to take a giant soupy shit. anyways i took it only to realize that there was no toilet paper so i had to use my shirt to wipe and then throw it on the latrine. waste of a shirt but its funny now.

That's hilarious. Luckily I was well stocked on my personal supply of toilet paper. God it was awful. Ever not know whether you should shit or vomit first? The usual order is to shit in the hopes that you'll feel better and not resort to vomitting, but then the shit is so terribly disgusting that it flips the vomit switch. You know it'll pass in a few days but lying there sitting through travel sickness is ******* terrible.

Past two days have been really mediocre for training. Dennis has taken over the gringo class and he's working us hard in preparation for the next tournament on the 14th. His warm ups murder me, technique is usually over my simplistic jiu jitsu head. Then I'm getting multiple rounds with fresh people starting on the bottom, then doing squat jumps between rounds. He mentally broke me far too early on both days. I was really frustrated and basically laid in bottom side control survival position and let people tap me. I don't know, I'm having a hard time getting into the right frame of mind.

However I've been much more focused and stronger willed in the evening Brazilian class. I missed yesterdays because I didn't have a clean gi, but tonight I felt much more resilient, though I can't say I beat any of the three brown belts that I rolled...I played much smarter and didn't give up until I was beat.

Reverse Scissor Sweep. Get into a scissor sweep position. The hand gripping their sleeve lets go and reaches across for their far sleeve, then sit up and grip their belt with your other hand. Lean your body back as you extend your leg, lifting them up and out in the opposite direction a scissor sweep would.

Gringo Class. Went better now that I'm not getting drilled for the tournament. A couple techniques escaping side control that I want to get down.

First is one from the Rickson Seminar. When they have are in side control scarf hold, with your far arm grab their collar closest to you. Keeping your arm stiff and connected to the rest of your body, hip out as you drive that collar up and into their throat until you can tip them over.

From side control when they are should pressuring and their arm is reaching across your body. Cross face, bump up to create space as you get your lower arm to the other side of their body. Then bump again, driving that lower arm straight up under their arm pit and spin out with your body.

In reverse scarf hold, you can grip around their head and basically bridge them over.

Brazilian Class tonight, I need a nap in the meantime.

Went to the Brazilian class last night. I was feeling really lazy and looking for a way out of class. Sometimes a cup of coffee is just enough to get you there. Had a decent class but not alot worth mentioning.

Today Gordo's academy had a promotion day where they gave out a couple belts, and then we all had some lunch. There was 21 black belts present in total. Crazy. The weekend is here and I have no idea what to do with it. Jack has mentioned going to the beach to do a workout there, so maybe that'll happen. I'll probably end up at the beach either way.

I'm getting sick, I can feel it in my sinuses and I'm getting chills. It shouldn't be a big hindrance but kind of a pain in the ass. It always annoys me having a cold in hot weather.

Pretty tame weekend here. Many of the fun people from the house are gone or are leaving this week. An overcrowded house has it's problems, but it sucks to see some of your only friends in the country leaving out of nowhere.

Beach training didn't go through on saturday. A few of us ended up at Rio de Janeiro's largest shopping mall, mostly to hit up the food court. I looked for some new books to buy, but out of an enormous library of a bookstore, there was only 2 or 3 shelves with books in english and they all looked terrible. I ended up back at the mall today for some more food court action, then went straight to the beach solo. Then Gerbil asked me to come wingman for him, but the girls were a no show. We streamed the fight night, pretty solid card. Now I'm alone here right in the middle of my vacation in Brazil, and what am I eagerly anticipating the most?

That's right. Starcraft 2 is almost mine. Let the nerdery begin.

Past couple days have been lame. What I thought was a bad cold turned out to be some sort of flu. I had felt it coming in my sinuses for a few days. Then I got hit really hard with insane mucus production, chills, and weird fever dreams. I was listening to some Eckharte Tolle on audio as I usually do when I head to bed, and the half asleep feverish state gave me some weird ass dreams. I ended up giving up and playing Starcraft 2 in my room all through the night, following morning and afternoon. When 6pm hit I took a double dose of sleeping pills and slept for 17 hours straight. The next day I spent trying to rid myself of all the mucus that had built up over my full day of sleep, and eating and downing orange juice to get my strength back up.

Today I'm feeling better, with just some minor cold symptoms and a little weakness. I weighed myself at the gym, 89.5kg without a gi on. That's 196lbs. If things keep up like this, I'm going to be a middleweight. I'm not going to worry about my weight though. So many people obsess over numbers. I'm just focusing on my training and a healthy diet over the remainder of my stay and fighting at the nearest weight class when the time comes.

I went in today for a light workout, just did 4 rounds on the heavybag, disheartened by what being sick has done to this already awful striking endurance. Then Gerbil came in and I held the pads for him for 5 rounds. I'm hoping we can fit in a pad session for eachother once a week.

It's raining till saturday.

Brazilian malls are mostly like any other mall, except for the insane amount of hot girls, and shockingly high prices for imported goods. I mentioned earlier that Brazilians have to buy running shoes in installment plans, right? A clean pair of new white nike's is a big status symbol around here. Whereas at home I'd think it looks dorky. The mall was two floors and the second floor had indoor rope climbing for kids, so you'd look up and there'd be an 8 year old above you doing a balancing act (tied up for safety, of course). One of the other cool things I witnessed is a lady with a big brush cleaning the floors....on rollerblades! Oh, and of course she was hot. Best job ever?

Today got switched to no-gi and to be taught by Jeremy. Everyone showed up late except for me and Gerbil was running class... Which means he locked the door at five after and I got a free private. He asked me what I wanted to do and I had something in mind for this sort of situation - I wanted an intro into submissions below the waist.

Went over ALOT. Starting from a transition from side control to reverse mount, then falling off for a kneebar, an alternate hold for the knee bar, a calf crush for when they cross their feet, and also an inverted heel hook. Got alot of reps in under different situations, and in one hour I feel like I've gone from complete ignorance to having a decent grasp on the basics. Also did rolling kneebar from near turtle position.

So I was dreading going over all these techniques but it was a necessary thing in order to capitalize and help register on this large amount of input. Luckily however, Gerbil has videos on his youtube account of everything we did today. I'll repost them here and review them a few times.

Let's see if I can figure out how to insert videos on here.

Transition from side control

To the knee bar

When that fails

and another backup

I figure I'll do 5 privates with him, so probably one a week until I go home. Awesome.

Rolling knee bar technique, when they're attacking you in the turtle but their one leg is resting inbetween yours, grab it with the arm on the same side as them, rolling forwards and driving your leg into their armpit, trap and finish kneebar in the same way you would in the above video. Can switch to a calf crusher if they lock up their legs.
