Brazilian Class

Gordo left to the U.S. to corner Raphael dos Anjos, so we have another black belt running the show. His name is Hedge. At least that's how it's pronounced, probably actually starts with an R. A different warmup with lots of pushups and abs. Technique was a few sweeps when they're standing over you in open guard.

Today Mario Sperry was in, who is a pretty big deal. I mentioned earlier how I don't get really starstruck and rush semi famous people in the fight world with my camera...however I got to meet him and have a short conversation before and after rolling with him for a round, so I felt justified this time in asking him for a picture. =)

Against Sperry I basically just did my best to stall his advances, defend, and reguard when possible. He tapped me with a choke from north/south. Also caught me in a triangle that when I defended he went for the arm, then defended that and finished with a triangle. I was in trouble for a third time when the round ended.

Also rolled a brown belt today with the same intentions of Sperry, but this time actually did survive the round. I think. I don't remember getting submitted, at least. Lot's of good escapes on my part, but I'm ******* lost as far as passing this particular brown belt's open guard.

A Brazilian called me Brock Lesnar today. Hahah. Maybe 20lbs ago I was a smaller Stefan Struve, but nowadays my body is more of an albino Kendall Grove.

Tonight is UFC 117, regarded by the fans as the Brazil vs. USA event. Brazil is sitting pretty nicely. It's biggest underdog is Rafael dos Anjos, a member of my gym here and someone I've seen around on an almost daily occurence.

Rafael has been in the UFC for almost 2 years. A BJJ black belt with decent striking and wrestling, he dropped his first two fights but has bounced back since, winning his last 3 fights. Tonight is easily the biggest fight of his life against Clay Guida. If you watch the UFC very often you'll know that Guida always brings it. He's the guy that makes or breaks you in the lightweight division... beating him is almost always a necessity to being in the upper echelon. Rafael is the underdog here, it would be real cool to watch this guy break through. In his corner tonight you'll see the head of our academy, Gordo, he'll be the stern one who looks like the bad guy in the Mummy, yelling in Portuguese. This fight will be good.

OMG!! Mario Sperry! I read about him in A Fighter's Heart, only Sam Sheridan kept referring to him as Ze Mario.

Yes, I read that book in Thailand at the beginning of this journey. =)

Have you read A Fighter's Mind yet? I can't find anywhere to steal it off the internet and I certainly won't find it on shelves around here, so I'll have to wait until I get back.

Today I was feeling a bit better, and figured I'd go try to combat all the unintentional weight and muscle loss going on out here. I got a bit overzealous and ended up doing a bit of a marathon workout. Dropped the weights slightly considering I'm out 20lbs and have haven't lifted in like 2 months.

Marathon Workout

DB Bench 3x6@75lbs
Squats 3x6@185lbs
Deadlifts 3x6@185lbs
Military Press 3x6@95lbs
DB Rows 3x6@75lbs
Hammer Bar Curls 3x6@75lbs
Standing Calf Raises 3x6@180lbs
Lying Leg Curl 3x6@120lbs
Leg Press (heel to ass)3x6@180lbs
Skullcrusher 3x6@85lbs
DB Curl 3x6@42lbs
Superset 3x6@85lbs
Close Grip Bench, Wide Grip Bench, Regular Bench

I enjoyed the gym experience out here, though they didn't have a proper squat rack. There's all the same nuances of gyms back home that make me laugh, the half reps, the spotters helping the lfits, the staring at your body in the mirror.

The girls choose very interesting attire to work out in. Reminds me of that Kylie Minogue music video. This country is a goddamn paradise of women...you wouldn't believe.

The receptionist girl that was showing me around and speaks a bit of english and was pretty friendly so I'm going to ask her out next time I'm there...which will be sooner rather than later =)

Fights tonight!!

Went to the beach today. Nice day. =)

This is what I woke up to on Saturday.

The guy who won the little scrap is from Jordan. He made the mistake of leaving his laptop unattended and his facebook logged in. It got trolled pretty hard. It's especially funny because I don't think they're too tolerant of gays over there. =)

I haven't read A Fighter's Mind. I'd like to. I might buy it with the Borders GC I've got.

Why in the hell would anyone leave their laptop unattended anywhere?

BJJ Gringo classes

Grip breaks to entries, grip breaks to takedowns, 40x4 guard passes, hip bumps, triangles from guard. I'm not feeling optimal today, lung strength doesn't seem to be optimal and all my muscles are still achey from lifting. Dennis was nice to me and I just helped the other guys prepare for the upcoming tournament. Got two rounds of regular rolling after, landed an arm triangle on a white belt and just played around positionally with a blue belt chick.

Oh forgot to mention, I saw Murilo Bustamente at the beach yesterday. He's an old school Pride guy and I believe part owner of Brazilian Top Team.

This house is packed with people and we're often on laptops before, inbetween, and after training. The shared space we're all squeezed into makes strikes like these inevitable. =)

Feeling stiff and not eager to train but still went. After warmup and technique we did positional drills starting from back control. Did decently. In rolling I got Gerbil first and was dominated and submitted more than usual. A little discouraged but I got a good sized and strong blue belt. He was a bit spazzy but I managed to sweep and dominate positionally. When he escaped my mount and I was back in guard I put an arm bar on him, then swept to finish. Of course the one day that I don't have a cup on I have a strong assed blue belt in an armbar crushing my nuts. =)

Dunno what's going on but physically I've been gassing extremely fast in training as of late. Mentally I've been giving up quickly, and just haven't had my head in the game. Hopefully it'll pass soon.

All my gis are soaked so I'll do some burpees this evening and try to work away at these roadblocks.
