Did my second private today with Gerbil

We continued with reviewing the side control roll to reverse mount, knee bar, heel hook, calf crush. I asked him today to do new entries into these moves. We worked on them from bottom half guard, top half guard, and north south. Also got introduced to toe holds when the angle for the knee bar isn't right. We're going to review and keep building on these things over the rest of my stay here. I genuinely believe I can incorporate all these new aspects into my game and pick up some brand new and very valuable tools. I know how quick I am to tap to leg locks, it's a fear of the unknown sort of thing. I can turn this aspect around and use these scarier and more unknown submissions on future opponents.

I'm not going to go over the details today, because they're still foggy, and Gerbil said we can video record all these moves at some point for future use. Probably a good idea, because I'll struggle explaining all of these, even to myself.

I've been really lazy lately. I don't know if it's lazy, but something's been wrong with my body and I haven't been keeping up the training frequency I'd like to. It's been since that flu. I feel good and train twice, then feel like ass again the next day. Just going to keeping pushing at it until I can train up to my potential again.

Gringo Class

Grip breaks, Open guard sweeps, closed guard sweeps to finish, submissions from guard. Then Dennis tried to teach me a 4 submission combo from side control. I was not picking it up quickly and was getting frustrated but it seemed to be slowly coming together by the end. Brazilian class tonight.

Brazilian Class

Got rounds in with a good sized brown belt, black belt, and a blue belt. Lots of tapping to the first two.
Something terrible happenned today. My head accidentally collided with another guy and I think I gave myself a bit of a concussion. At first I felt fine and continued training, but when I got home a huge migraine started to set in and I started to space out big time. Almost felt like I was going to pass out. I tried reading my facebook but actually couldn't see or focus on it until I zoomed in really far on the words. Then as I was walking to go get some food, my hand started getting all tingly and going numb, then my tongue. I'm feeling a bit better now but my head is ******* killing me and I could really go for some tylenol right now.

I guess I missed you on facebook there. Tell me what BJJ class is like in Chilliwack recently... Is Dave completely gone now? I guess Thiago took over but now he's going back to Brazil? So does Danny run class now then? Also, any new promotions around?

Was feeling much better today. I drowned a few ibuprofen with a redbull and headed to the weights gym. Never let a concussion get in the way of a good workout. Toned down my marathon workout from last Saturday as far as exercises go, but upped the weights slightly. Something to do with my recent brain swelling made me dizzy in a couple sets so I failed early. There's no good in passing out in a squat with no bars to catch it.

DB Bench 3x6@75lbs
Squats 6,6,4@195lbs
Deadlifts 3x6@195lbs
Military Press 6,6,4@105lbs
DB Rows 3x6@75lbs
Lying Leg Curl 3x10@130lbs
Leg Press (heel to ass)3x6@270lbs
Leg Press Calf Raises)3x6@270lbs
EZ Bar Curl 1x6@105lbs

Natasha, one of the front desk girls that stole my heart last saturday, wasn't working. There was another girl with equal qualifications, but alas, no english at all is a no go for me.

Weekend was mediocre. Less than a month left, yikes. A few people participated in a tournament and I went to watch.

Gringo class

Gerbil taught. Warmed up with armbars from guard. Then armbar, they pull their arm out, to triangles. Some points to note on the second exercise is to use the leg going over the back of their head, at the knee, to push off and move your hips. You can also use your other leg at their hip if you're gripping the leg over their neck to keep posture broken. The point is to get that angle on the transition to triangle, you should be in line with their trapped arm if you need to switch back to an armbar.

Technique today was closed guard passing. The guard break is both hands on their biceps with broken posture, one hand moves and grips at the center of the lapel, straight arm as the other hand moves to their hip and grabs at the pants, knuckles in and arm straight. This arm is on top of the leg as you lean towards that side, keeping arms straight. Then the hand at lapel goes to the other hip, still straight arming, elbows turned outside to make it more difficult to break posture. Then you just walk your knees and hips back to open it. From there, the pass is the same as in this video, when he circles outside the legs.
Stack guard pass
One detail that was different is from the stack he uses one hand to take a collar grip before walking his legs around and shrugging past the opponents guard.

We also learned an alternative from this pass. You can sit back with that gable grip over their legs, with their hips up on your knees. You use one hand to take a grip at their lapel, a low grip that takes out all the slack but allows you to bury your elbow deep to your hip. Then you can shrug past their legs similarily to the first. The grip is important, because they feel like they can roll away or reguard because you have very little attachment to their body, however that one grip essentially traps them.

We did split shifts rolling alternating with partners. We got in a small but very skilled purple from Socal today which proved to be a very challenging roll for me. Good class. Tonight I'm going to do the Brazilian class and attempt a boxing class immediately after.

Brazilian class. Techniques were some sweeps from half guard, probably not anything I'm going to make use of though.

We drilled half guard and I did decently passing a few guys.

In rolling I got a couple Brazilian blue belts that were smaller than me. I had two really great back and forth rolls with both of them and focused on being the more technical and calm one instead of muscling around to win. Got an armbar from mounted triangle.

There was a sambo guy in there today, straight out of Russia. He looks exactly what you'd expect a hardcore Russian Sambo guy to look like...think Fedor face with Pride days Wanderlei Silva body...all I could think about was Soviet Russia jokes from Family guy. Anyways, I didn't get matched, but I think he's a black belt in Sambo, do they rank in belts? Anyways, he had a blue belt on in class and he was going ******* hardcore. He did a hardcore kneebar on a guy he was rolling which I think is illegal at blue belt here, and also something they want you to be gentle with. The Brazilians caught on and everyone was eyeing him very warily by the end of class. Interested to see if they match him up with the best guys in class to contain him a bit or sick him upon me, the big disposable gringo, next class.

Gringo Class

We've just had like 15 Ecuadorians join us today, so I guess I can't call this Gringo class anymore. They're all blue belt and below so it looks like the pecking order has changed. Didn't help me much today because I just got paired with Gerbil and two purples. Very mediocre day. Wrist is still sore and I noticed my knee getting some joint soreness out of nowhere today. Going to grab a nap before class tonight.
