Ok so, i decided to finally start doing one of these. As much for my own enjoyment as anyone else but i hope it becomes an interesting read
So, a bit of background is in order i suppose;
Im 27 years old and started boxing when i was 26. I boxed for approximately a year before becoming tired of it and deciding to take up MMA. I joined my local MMA gym roughly 6 month ago and have been there since.
I was training 3 times a week until may, when my wife and I had our first child so since then i have been training roughly 1-2 times a week (usually the MMA class and the BJJ class).
I try and get out running twice a week and usually do between 3-6 miles.
I have also just rejoined the gym i used to frequent in order to start building muscle again.
Wednesday 28th July
About fully recovered from a torn Rotator cuff i suffered at BJJ a couple of months ago. Time to get back on it!
Headed out to Paramount Health and fitness to hit the weights with my brother. He's a bit of a gym monkey so i relied on him to push me through the session a bit.
We did a session for chest and Arms. My shoulder seemed ok, if not a little more stiff than usual. Trained for roughly an hour and when i left i was pretty tight, always a good indicator that i'd pushed myself hard enough. I enjoyed it more than i expected which is always a good thing...hate the first couple of sessions back on the weights after a long layoff.
Thursday 29th of July
Woke up this morning and im suprisingly fresh. I honestly thought i'd be mega stiff this morning but im ok. Had a protein shake before i left for work which will sort me out for the morning.
Arrived at work to find my new batch of supplements has arrived. BSN N.O-Xplode for pre workout and Dymatize Elite Whey Protein for post work out.
Ive got an MMA class tonight so i'll give them a whirl today.
I always drink a protein shake post workout but this BSN stuff got good reviews so i thought i'd give it a try as ive never taken anything pre workout before.
So, i got in from work yesterday feeling a little worn out. It felt like i had been at work for about 30 hours, when in reality, it had only been 8. I had a couple of hours before i needed to be at training so i made a little bit of pasta and played with my daughter for a bit.
(Took my NO-Xplode about 30 minutes prior to training and that stuff is like rocket fuel. It took about 45 minutes to kick in but i felt so sharp and energetic for the majority of the 2 hour session.)
So i get to training with my pal and there are about 14 people have turned out this week. A good number for the size of the mats. I stretch and do the warm up, i feel fresh but the sweat is literally pouring out of me.
Not to worry.
We partner up and move on from the warm up to some pad work. I partner with a guy roughly my height and probably 10-15lbs lighter than me.
We start with a few straight forward drills (Jab, right hand...low kick, right hand, left hook etc).
Im feeling pretty sharp but the guy im with isnt giving me enough resistance holding the pads so i feel like im slightly over extending. I have a word and he sorts it out.
We then move on to power shots for 5 minutes straight. basically every shot must be a power shot. I find these drills difficult cos i always feel like i should be throwing a second or third shot and slipping/blocking punches.
there are a few guys in the gym who are fighting at a show at the end of August. The last few sessions have been mainly setup to prepare them for the fights.
So, we are moving on to some sparring for the last 30-40 minutes of the session. One of the guys who is fighting is gonna do a bit of rotational sparring where after every 2 minutes a fresh guy comes in. Now, this guy is a good fighter. Ex boxer with real power in his hands and quick with it...he ALWAYS goes in too hard in sparring.
Im in second, and after watching the first guy go in get a pasting i know im gonna have my hands full... I got my ass kicked.
Now, im a decent boxer, and i knw how to throw combinations and slip, weave and use my footwork to get out of the way but tonight for some reason i start dropping my right hand like clock work and then when i get swarmed i started turning to the side and just ACCEPTING the beating. I was horrible. i dont know what came over me, it was if i knew what i should be doing but just wasnt doing it.
I got a pal of mine to video it and it's not good. I probably landed 3-4 good shots but must have taken 8 or more. I might upload it later if i get time. heres a few stills for the time being though: (im in the grey)

Friday 30th July
Woke up this morning in agony. I took a big spinning back kick to the ribs in sparring which im really feeling today.
Weighed myself and im down to 168lbs. Good stuff.
Drank a protein shake and im now sitting at work.
No training for me today as im taking my inlaws out for a meal tonight.
I might try and sneak in a 3 mile run straight after work if i get time.
Got up on saturday at about 8am to find that my ribs were really starting to limit my movement a bit now. they arent broken so there is no point going to the docs so i decided just to soldier on through...y;know, cos im tough and stuff hahaha.
Decided that i would go for a run as it was nice out and still pretty early. I set out with the intention of doing roughly 3 miles...7 miles later and i finally finished. Once i was out i felt good so i just kept on running (a bit like forrest gump!).
Sunday 1st August
Decided i'd get my ass to the gym to hit the weights. Headed up there and did a varied workout not specific to any one muscle group. I managed all without much problem with the exception of 1 chest excersise which i really could not do due to my rib injury. sucks!
All in all i ate pretty well at the weekend and didnt go over my daily calorie allowance (1740). Im pretty happy about the amount of training i managed to get in and im planning on heading back to the gym tonight.
Tuesday 03rd August
Got up with what can only be described as intense rib pain. I surely cant have broken a rib...i didn't get hit 'That' hard. Oh well, soldier on i must.
Went to the Gym after work with my brother again. We did a quite intense Shoulder/Bicep workout. I enjoyed it and managed to get through all of the reps i needed too. My ribs were giving me a slight bit of jip but no pain no gain right?
drank my usual protein shake afterwards and had my pre workout supps as well.
still in a bit of rib pain this morning...not good. I refuse to go to the docs. Gonna give it another week or so to see if it improves by itself?
Started my day with a cod liver oil capsule and protein shake. Im finding the cod liver oil really good and have been taking it every morning for the past 6 weeks or so. I feel like im not getting as many niggling injuries in my joints like i have been prone to in the past.
Decided to look into Split muscle gain workouts properly and have stumbled accross THIS website. Gonna modify one of the 3 day workouts to suit my needs. To be fair, it is practically what i am doing at the minute anyway but i want a more rigid training regime.
So, it's been roughly a week since my last update.
BAD THINGS HAVE BEEN HAPPENING!!
i trained last thursday and my ribs were just too sore, so ive had to take a week or 2 off any type of hard training (no MMA, no weights etc) so im pretty much just left with running for the time being.
THEN..on saturday i came down with a rather wicked bout of food poisoning which is settled yesterday but im still feeling a bit rough.
Gonna try and run a few miles tonight and then might head up to MMA training tomorrow to maybe watch etc.
So, my ribs are almost healed and ive been back training. On Thursday i jumped straight back into it with some sparring with a guy who is training to fight this coming thursday. It went well, he is really under prepared and no where near ready to fight. we where supposed to do 3 2 minute rounds but he lasted approximately 60 seconds before he quit after i dropped him with a right hook. (not even a hard shot either, we were only going at 50%). He kept dropping his hands and was circling into it. i told him several times but he didn't listen.
There was an MMA show on Saturday night so on friday my friend and I went down to the gym to get a bit of training in the cage whilst it was up. We sparred pretty light for about an hour, doing 2 or 3 minute rounds with frequent breaks. We then did a few rounds with the 4oz gloves on and full contact MMA sparring, going at about 30% power. It was great fun, and although i hadn't been training for a few weeks before i felt pretty sharp.
So, Saturday nights show rolled around and as it was a home show there were quite a few of the guys from our gym fighting, most of which I'd sparred with and helped prepare for their fights. they did great and all of them won with the exception of 1 guy.
and on that note.... Think im going to fight in the next show!!
This is quite a big thing for me as ive never fought competitively before and never been in any kind of fight anywhere.
It isn't til march so ive got loads of time to prepare but im gonna wait til around december time to decide if im definately going to fight.
Got a lot of work to do on my ground game and my wrestling but my stand up is quite solid and if i can improve i should be in good shape.
back to MMA training again last night. We worked a lot of stand up technique and i felt great. My coach even commented on how sharp i was looking.
We did a bit of sparring and i was on fire. don't know what came over me this week but i don't think i got hit once!! my deffence was great and my counter punching was quick and accurate. Im feeling a lot more confidence in my self at the minute and found that i get better results when i go on the offensive rather than wait for my opponent to make a move.
blasted through the cardio session as well and felt great.
My only slight concern at the minute is that my ribs are still a bit tender and that is stopping me from doing any of the BJJ or free rolling sessions.
cant complain though, i feel great. Gonna try and get out for a 6 mile run in the morning then maybe a bit of bag work on sunday if i can find the time to get down to the gym.
