To run or not to run! How much running????
 
Im a person who absolutely hates running, however i know of its benifits!! Do u think that running is overrated and how much should you actually do. I currently weigh 185ilb and i try to run about 4-5 times a week for 2.5 miles at a time, i complete this in about 25 mins. Is that enough?????
Isnt too much running bad for your joints? Also should a big guy run less than a small one???

Elliptical trainers.. great alternitive to running little to no joint impact all the benifits of running with out the stress plus I always found it more fun.. not a big fan of running myself either..

Yeah, Im with you, Ive actually got one of them at home. But do you think it can be a total substitute for running or just a supplement to a regimeme that has running in it.
I mean ive read articles on people like Matt hughes and he they said tht they run for like AN HOUR evry morning!!! Is that true, cause Matt is a phenom and his cardio is top notch!!!
Also I know the health benifits of cardio, and i know that it is a good way to shed the wieght and build a base of cardio endurance, but how much would you say youd need to do, assuming that ur already in pretty good shape???

It all varies.. Me I need alot.. my cardio is not bad.. but I need it for dropping pounds.. I used to do alot of endurance sports when I was little where good cardio came with it.. and I was lucky to have no problem with it.. just need to shed pounds and I'll be good.. but cardio is different for everyone..

more than cardio, running is use for weight control and leg endurance...and recouperation...

I get bored of running so I started to do bench hops and bleecher running....I run a bit but not too much....and a lot of grappling...yesterday I ran home after working on the bleechers (running and jumping) and I was running like never before....my legs felt stronger and I was faster and my cardio felt better...

but running is good...u dont have to run every day but at least try running for 20 mins 2 to 3 times a week...

when u are running and there is still half a mile to get home and u feel like dying the mental toughness shows up...running helps with the mental toughness...the abbility to keep fighting even when ur tired...

Almost all professional MMA fighters do an hour of running outside each day, because it gets them out of the gym and helps them with their cardio at the same time. It's not as practical for MMA fighting as some people might tell you that it is, because it doesn't help get oxygen to muscles as fast or as efficiently as you might have to during a fight.

I don't know why you think that Hughes' cardio is top notch, because he gasses out pretty bad. Against Newton and Sakurai he had to spend at least 2 or 3 minutes recovering before he had the strength to slam them. I'm not saying that it's bad, but when compared with guys like GSP it's not that good.

I suppose, MH may not have been the best example, but with reading that article that said he runs an HOUR EVERYDAY I must have just said that.
So you reckon ALL MMA fighters run for an hour every day! Wow! Thats alot of running! I mean, what kinda pace do they set, really fast or real slow to burn the calories!
I know, haveing been a boxer that boxers synonomously associate running with boxing, the roadwork bieng an integral part of any boxers training, but does this apply to MMA too?
Running the bleachers, that is really hard! I have done spritwork, and do it as often as possible even a few 20 yard sprints in the back garden. How often do you think youd need to encorporate that into your training? Would once a week be o.k?

The thing about running (in fact, most arduous exercise that involves the human body traveling from one point to another) is that the act of running, or conditioning yourself to run makes your body lose weight. When the human body conditions itself to do a certain act, or to work in a given activity for a continued period of time, it will begin to change itself physiologically to become more effecient at it. Any activity that involves moving the whole of your body mass from one point to another, or to continually keep it in motion will cause your body to become more effecient at it. One of those changes would be the loss of weight.

If your body knows that it will work in a more effecient manner running a mile without having to carry X number of extra pounds of mass, it will shed it. It is the same reason why you don't see overweight mountain climbers, swimmers, figure skaters, gymnasts, or dancers. extra mass does not facilitate the constant movement of the body over each given amount of distance or time.

But that doesnt tell me why i hate it so much, lol! Seriously how much running do you think a guy need to do, a 185lbs 5'11''. and at what pace.
currently i run about 2 1/2 in about 25 or less, i know its not quick but is that quick enough???

25 minutes? I don't think you're running intensely enough. I think 2.5 miles a day is great, but a lot of non-runners can probably finish in around the same time. Many of times I used to run in HS Wrestling, I would shoot for 2 miles in less than 17 minutes. That may sound like a drastic change, but in comparison to my little brother (who was a Cross Country runner at the time) he did 2 miles in 13 minutes or less. If you're running with good form, with decent shoes, and use it as a complimentary form of training, then you won't have to worry about joint problems (at least not as much as rolling hardcore as many times out of the week--depending on your training partners).

However, at 5'11" and 185lbs, I don't think you're too big or too small for your size. Now if you're looking at fighting competitively and you're shooting for the 170lbs weight class, I can see where you might be concerned. In which case, there isn't a hell of a lot you can do to shave off of your frame (especially if you have any sort of muscle mass). Going forward to that end, you're going to have to look a lot at what you're eating, as that will begin to determine a lot of factors in your weight.
