Beat a boxer / bjj guy and they still talk shit?

Hey guys. So for those who read my intro you know that I am not into competitive MMA, and that I currently do Wing Chun. I don't do any other style or cross train, not saying I wont or have anything against it, I am just currently focusing on Wing Chun.

I am in a new city going to school. This city happens to be a city where competitive MMA is popular. Well, I was taking a jog down town wearing my school's shirt. While jogging I hear someone yell at me, when I looked back it was a guy in a gi, yelling from the door of a BJJ and Boxing gym. I figured this guy just wanted to talk casually about martial arts so I jog back over to speak with him.

Then the shit talking started about how Kung Fu sucks....... Stuff about why isn't it in UFC and so on and so on. Then the challenge was made. Now I don't consider myself in fighting shape. I am still getting into shape, and I am currently in the process along with my fellow classmates of refining our Wing Chun and its training methods. I accepted the challenge, which was stupid since I was alone in someone else's gym.

We squared off and after a probing punch or two was thrown I had his hands completely trapped and was firing elbows on him. We wanted to fight again. This time he focused on putting me on the mat. He couldn't put me on the mat (We work on take down defense at my school.) and eventually I had him down on the mat dazed or out, from a good knee to the face from him shooting in.

It was quiet when it was all over, I figured I proved my point right, so I left. They started calling my school back home (Two hundred miles away.) and started leaving harassing messages on the answering machine. They were challenging the school, talking shit etc, etc, my Sihing called to tell me about this.

What gives....? I know Kung Fu hasn't been well represented in MMA but why the immaturity?

The good news is I am 2-0 in non friendly sparring MMA fights.

Cyclist.

*edit*
Sorry if this is the wrong forum but I only post in the Training section of the forums.

There is a lot of disrespect shown towards other martial arts since the big MMA boom. I figure that they don't look at their BJJ or boxing as self defense, but more like how to beat someone up. Good for you beating that guy though. Too bad that they didn't grow from it, but instead harass your school. Respect has always been important in martial arts, but there are so many people just tryng to learn the techniques now instead of the art itself that it is starting to actually degrade what it means to be a martial artist. They'll probably learn down the road though.

I would have to say that you got very, very lucky there. Not too many guys would've been able to get our scott-free in hostile territory, especially considering the (now) obvious maturity level of the gym members. Next time (if it behooves you), talk to the head guy there. If he's a stand up guy, he'll take care of that ordeal for you. If the guy in charge is a prick, well you've just found out why the guys at that gym act the way they do. You'd probably have to find a new jogging path after that.

The silence seemed as if I proved a point, everyone was quiet and didnt say much. It didn't seem hostile at the time, but it seems as if they made the decision for it to be hostile after I had left.

I think so of the members are students on campus, I might have told them I am a student living in campus in the beginning to be friendly and conversation. I thought the guy getting my attention was because he was generally interested in WC.....

So much for trying to develop a working cross training relationship huh?

I thought we had gotten past this in the Martial Arts world.

Yeti-TSDWBJJ has a little shameless behaviour in the past
After the Gracies ran around beating up every other Martial Art in the world, most gyms adopted that kind of "our art is the best attitude".

Alot of gyms see MMA as more of a way to kick anyone's ass and not as an art.

Its Mixed Martial Arts not Mixed Martial Rage or something like that.

Actually, that mentality is as old as dirt and pre-dates the Gracies by centuries. If that wasn't the case, Musashi wouldn't have been famous for the number of duels he won (most by killing his opponent).

People seem to forget that we don't live in such medieval times. Couple that with the natural growth of a person's ego and you've got a huge field for potential issues.

Im shocked the instructor let this happen if you didnt sign a waver or anything. Someone from the streets coming in and doing a straight up mma fight is unpredictable. If you did get hurt they might have been in a deep whole. But good job on the win. I am a Bjj-Thai guy myself but respect every single style in fighting because as in the name MMA is all pretty much all martial arts.

Good story cyclist. Seems like you did well in the fight. I would take that advice though and find another jogging route.
