I've been thinking about what it takes to earn a black belt over the last few days, it's not something I dwell on frequently, but after seeing a friends kids graduate a level up with my friend Daniel Wanderley on the weekend, it got me thinking about the value of a Black Belt. I mean the term is so loosely thrown around and while I do believe the adage of 'A belt is only good to hold your pants up' there is still an air of status around achieving this level in training. The media have us think its just the golden standard of martial arts without actually looking into what it takes to earn one.
I myself am only a Blue under Daniel and I have seen what it takes to earn a Black with him, its a real accomplishment and an achievement to be proud of, sure, I'm not saying shout it from the roof tops and brag about it, but when I am in the dawn of my life I would like to look back on my martial arts career (hopefully I will still be practicing if health allows it) and see that I made that achievement.
So call it a goal, call it a path, whatever...I call it COMMITMENT, because thats what a black means to me, a promise that I kept, and that will continue to keep. It's still a really long way off, heck, I might not even get there..but I'm tryin every day
Enough ranting, I would love to hear from anyone who has made it, or is on the path to making it, leave me your opinions!
