I've always done better with carbs at least an hour before a workout and importantly a ride. If I don't carb load before and during a ride I run out of gas easy. I make sure before a ride I do a mixture of complex carbs and simple sugars. So bread and fruit before a ride.
During a ride pit stop..... thats when you bust out the junk food. I stick with twinkies, but some of the guys I ride with suck down a hot dog or two, I even know a guy who chugs half and half.... That was a sight.
