Starting up, looking for a good gym and style of training

Hello I'm just starting out, and wanted to take up something that I can learn really quick, I don't plan on doing any ring fighting, just something that can be applied to real world and really effective.

I'm in the Los Angeles/South Bay area and will be moving in about 4mo's for a new job so wanted to take something that I can learn quickly in the meantime.

A few coworkers have told me to take up Krav Maga, and I was just wondering if it was worth taking up? I'm just an average guy and don't plan on doing any competition fighting, thanks for the input.

Krav Maga (KM) is great, have been training at PHX KM for little over a year.

Started with their self defense & cardio program, it is "killer" pun intended.

You can learn quickly, and it will definetly get you in super shape (if you do 3 - 5 classes a week)

I am now in KM Fight program, I do fight conditioning, boxing, kickboxing and ground once a week, with a "let's put it all together class on Sat.

Bottom line, if you want to learn how to defend yourself real world, KM is a fantastic, and if you want to learn to MMA fight, then KM has it all.

Krav Maga is great if you are looking for pure self defense.. that is all it is.. Most of it is not allowed in the MMA arena.. but if you want self defense.. Krav Maga is a great way to go.. Check out the show on the History channel called.. Human Weapon.. they do an episode on Krav Maga.. very good.

Thanks you guys for the replies! I'm checking out the KM gym today, hopefully I'll decide today depending if the Krav Maga Fight program is not extra money so that way I can take everything.

Not looking to compete MMA just looking for pure self defense, so you guys pretty much are helping reinforce my decision

Krav fight is extra here in AZ, my advice is take the self defense / cardio program for at least 3 months, then you can decide if you want to do the fight.

Cardio includes heavy bag class, and is VERY intense.

Hmmm well speaking for myself... But I have found I can learn something from just about anybody... including newbies... Anyone who thinks he has nothing left to learn is just asking to get thier head bashed in.

I look at it this way... Your learning from an instructor I have never met and more then likely will never meet. You also learn things gifferently then me and you also think differently then me.. So in theory we can even have the same instructor.. and see the same teaching in a different way and even find different ways to apply it.. So I ask again... keep us posted on what you learn.
