Where to start?

Which martial art would be the best choice to choose in gaining a basic backround in fighting?

It depends on whether or not you actually want to take MMA seriously or not. If not, then choose whichever style you like best. If you do want to however, then I'd suggest starting out with BJJ (if you can do other styles as well, they youshould definately do them as well). Although some could argue that striking is more important since all fights start standing and it is more physically demanding than grappling, which will get you into better shape.

If you want something in the standup then I would highly reccommend Muay Thai as it teaches you to use punches, kicks, knees, and elbows. While boxing is good it limits you to what you can use where as Muay Thai offers you a lot in the way of fighting/ending a fight.

I think I might start with TKD to improve kicks...I am 6'3" and think it would be better to learn stand up first.
