Exercise in a leg cast?

I shattered my ankle and broke my leg pretty badly over the winter skiing. I've been in a leg cast for the last 2 and a half months and have 4 weeks to go. Abrubtly stopping playing basketball, going to the gym, and other active things I love doing... and replacing it with sitting around waiting for time to pass by has made me feel lazy and fat.

I've been wondering what I can do for cardio but just come up blank. I asked the doctor if I could put my shower bag over my leg and swim and he said no. I can't even sit in a sauna because too much sweat will make the cast too wet. I'm looking for creative ideas of things I can do for exercise, because I'd like to do something more than just sit-up workouts.

Im sure youve already probably thought of this but lifting weights is better than nothing and thats what it sounds like your doing right now.I messed up my wrist and just trained around it different lifts and such.Since you injured your leg you still have two arms so think about it.

PLus dude the saunas not going to do anything for your cardio.

MaddGreko has a little shameless behaviour in the past
same boat...

i feel your pain man. I took a hard spill on march 26 on my snowboard and completely blacked out from hittin' the back of my head. I landed on my knees with my face in the snow and my toes point as far up as they unwillingly wanted to go. I tried being a tough guy and waited a week before going to docs and after 3 weeks of appointments and plenty of xrays that didn't show anything, i got an MRI and i ended up fracturing my talus, the top ankle bone. Worst part is that i've been walking on it since it happened and the doc says that there's not much i can do about it except wait for the next 2 months before being active again. Totally blows....anyone who responds to this thread will be helping me as well. I hope you feel better man.

Cardio with ****ed up leg/legs is impossible, you could do some speed baggin'? Just hit the upper-body with some weights and such in the meantime. Cardio though..........nope

We got a Gazelle machine at the house here.

I hate the ****in thing but I found yesterday that I can operate it pretty easily while putting all my weight on my good leg and still get a pretty good workout. It's not the most ideal thing to do, but I guess it works. Maybe you could try that, MadGreco.

Speed bagging is a good idea too, cabby.

Studies have shown that exercising your good leg while the other is in a cast will help maintain the muscle in your bad leg. Typically people lose some muscle while in a cast, but if you stimulate the muscles in your good leg (leg extensions, Gazelle stuff, anything really) your body will somehow stimulate the muscles in the other leg. I don't know how the hell it works, but I read it somewhere. Next time, just don't break your leg. What the hell were you thinking anyway? just kidding. But really, I've been wondering if that whole "study" I read about works. It wont help your cardio, but it's better than nothing.
