Will anything in the army help me get into MMA

Was just wondering if anything i learn in boot camp, or the army in general, will help me out. mental training, physical, or otherwise, will anything help with training and conditioning? and to what degree? i know boot camp is only 9 weeks and im not expecting to become some sort of super athlete in that time, but i know i will improve. but any help or comments will be appreciated

You will cover combatives which is like a white belt first class BJJ lesson. You will learn a few basic submissions and a mount reversal and a guard pass that are pretty much garbage. They will probably have a little tournament to determine who the best combatives guy is and if you do that it will give you a little bit of experience but it will mostly be guys going for headlocks and their version of guillotines. You will get some good physical training like running and pushups etc.. and if you choose to eat good while you are there you can lose weight if needed and just get into good shape in general. There will probably be some barracks grappling and you can jump in there at your own risk. Overall BCT is an awesome experience and it can help a little bit with teaching you some ground basics but its not really designed to make you a good mma fighter. When do you ship out anyway and where are you going? I did my BCT at Fort Knox. Hooah!

Im not signed up yet but i am going to soon. Im going to join either the reserves or national guard, and goto college(they pay for it) But im definatley taking real BJJ/muay thai/mma classes when i get out of boot camp and AIT. How much do they make you run and how many pushups and other calisthetic stuff? I do plan to work hard in boot camp even if they really push you too or not. Im doing it for the whole experience. And i am sort of a good-eater by nature. I dont like junk food and i like a lot of fruits and vegetables and grainy stuff. Although when i was younger i teneded to kill it with soda and sugary cereal and stuff, but not anymore. Do they provide you with any nice fresh living stuff(salad, etc)? and any lean meats? i really didnt even think about what they give you to eat yet lol

I've personally never been in the service but I can imagine that your going to be built mentally more than anything and thats more important.

BTW, for anyone that has done it, how much physical conditioning do they make you do? ive been training pretty hard running and doing pushups and situps to make it easy and just to get in better shape in general, but im just wondering if im going to be suprised or if im just imagining it worse than it will be? thanks, let me know!

For me personally it was way easier from a physical perspective than I thought it would be based on movies etc.. It was not as hard as wrestling or mma training most of the time but when you are getting smoked sometimes its really awful. Just get into as good of shape as you can before you go and try to not to be an idiot or stand out too much and it will be fine. I thought the hardest part was not seeing your family or friends and waking up really early. You will make so many memories though its ridiculous, and you will walk away with some lifetime friends.

From the combatives perspective i dont doubt that some of those guys know how to fight but i watched a guy from the army base near where im stationed enter an amateur fight and got choked out fast.
I dont know how much boot camp will smoke you .Im air force ill honestly tell you that the muscles youll use during basic I never trained how they had us training so it was a shock personally.
The biggest thing is you dont have access to the stuff your used to on the outside even weights (at least for bmt idk about bootcamp) so you have to be creative to train outside of the squadrons pt.

I'm in the Army, so I'll weigh in.

Combatives will be a lot of fun. It's a decent introduction to grappling. I did well in basic, so I thought I'd be good, til I went to an MMA gym. lol

It's a good foundation for starting MMA though... as far as cardio goes, it's not going to help a ton. When I got out, I could run 5 miles easily but a few rounds in, I was gassed.

One thing basic is really good for is building up your core. It helps alot in MMA. A good core will make you much stronger than you may look or for your size.

As for food, we had access to decent food... fruits and salads, etc. were usually available. The main courses weren't always the best, alot of fried stuff, etc. It doesn't matter though, you'll lose weight due to the incredibly long days (17-18 hr days).... unless if you are a bean pole, then you'll pick up some pounds of muscle.

As for PT, it's really not that hard, but that depends on what kind of shape you are prior. I'd recommend being able to pass the PT test before you get there.
